Scottish dogs could be given ID tattoos

Looks like they are using Scotland for another test but this one i do agree with it should be all the UK.

The Scottish Parliament is due to launch an inquiry into an identification scheme for dogs, involving microchips and tattoos.

The inquiry will also consider setting up a national database.

It will draw on evidence from animal welfare groups and the police.

The Executive consultation is based on a report by the Dog Identification Group, which said the chief aim behind a permanent identification scheme should be the welfare of the individual dog.

The group suggested that an identification scheme should use either microchip or tattoo and strive to cover 75% of all dogs in five years.

It backed calls for a database holding canine identification records and recommended a public information campaign should be launched.

The report also stated that the scheme should be voluntary at first, but noted that consideration could be given to making it compulsory after five years.

The committee is now set to hold a brief inquiry into the issues raised by the report before giving its backing to the ideas.

If committee members vote to hold an inquiry, they will consider whether a voluntary scheme is appropriate and the feasibility of running a database.

If the inquiry gets the go-ahead, the committee is expected to begin taking evidence as early as April 3.

It would be excellent if microchipping & tattooing were to be made compulsory. Mine have chips & tattoos. The bitch has a de-sex tat as well as the ID one.

In Denmark your dog HAS to be either tattooed or chipped by law....

I think the law is from 2002.

Star is chipped already

Would they be tatooed as pups while still with the breeder?

but how do you ensure that no dogs slip through the net and so every dog is chipped and tattoed ? Just a thought as It is impossible to check on EVERY dog alive?
Greyhounds are often tattoed but when they ar dumped they sometimes have their ears cut off to prevent identification

Good point Lel but I personally think every system will have holes in it so to speak there will always be those who dont follow the rules and those who think they are above them, if the majority did go with the idea and 100 more dogs are identifiable through chipping and tatooing then I say its a good idea, better they try and encourage this than not to at all
