Why does my dog lay down when training her?

Hi,

Sometimes when I am training my dog, she will just lay down in the middle of the training session. Does anyone know why?

thank-you

It means she's had enough most likely. Training sessions that are too long will either tire out or bore dogs after a while. Also it may be a certain trick or maneuver that she really does not like, and she gives up on that one. My boy has a long back and the "roll over" command is hard for him, so sometimes he just lies down and won't roll. We move along if this happens.

My Jade is old and would rather lie down and snuggle than learn tricks or training, she can't be bothered so I won't waste my time trying to train a dog who is old and doesn't enjoy training. Just keep the sessions short and fun, and take breaks if you need to. Some dogs have shorter attention spans than others.

What breed and age is she?

Umm, perhaps she's turning into a cat?

But that can't be right. Cats wouldn't lie down in the middle of training, they'd lie down INSTEAD of training.

Boredom! Try and make it more fun and vary your activities. There is always the possibility that she is submitting as you are, perhaps too intense, take a little more time over things try to think of it from the dog's point of view and try to keep her interest going throughout the training session - don't make training sessions too long and always end them on a high note with big fuss cuddles etc. Good luck.

Hi,
She is a labrador retriever 7months old. She usually does it after like 5 minutes of training.

What are you teaching her?

What method are you using?

Both good questions. If she screws up and you shout at her or chastise her, she may shut down and just give up.

If she lies down after 5 mins just stop, it will take a lot longer to teach her if she isn't having fun, so keep sessions short and fun
