'Non-recognised breeds' section renamed to: Non-recognised 'breeds'

The Non-recognised breeds section has been renamed to:

Non-recognised 'breeds'

This is because more and more names associated to dogs (as 'breeds') seem to be surfacing, and as we do not wish to mislead the public in anyway, we have put the word 'breeds' in quotes.

As we have found over the years it seems any Tom, Dick or Harry can get together with a few friends, start breeding dogs and then give them a 'name'. Think designer breeds, think factions from other non-recognised 'breeds' splitting up to create their own name, etc. Are these actually a breed just because their breeders say they are? No.

Generally a breed is not considered a breed unless it breeds true to type - that means each mating results in a dog that is instantly recognisable as of it's 'breed'. As we are not experts in deciding this we will leave it to the three main dog registries to decide which dogs are, and are not considered a breed - by means of being accepted and recognised by them.

While we are still, as a site, open to the idea of genuine, and responsible breed creations, we must also recognise that there are a lot of people out there only interested in making a quick buck - and with that in mind we have renamed the section to clarify our standing on the issue.
