Internet banking virus!
Dont know if anyone banks on line? But please be aware
New Email Threat to Online Bank Accounts
Web warning: A new bogus email scam aims to defraud online bank customers
Internet bank customers are being warned about a new threat spread by email.
Experts have discovered emails that appear to be empty if opened, but which can infect the computer without the user knowing.
The software is designed to overwrite the Web site addresses for any bank stored on the computer. The next time the user clicks on the address they are automatically directed to a bogus Web site in order to steal log-in or financial details.
Staff at Internet security firm MessageLabs have spotted the latest email threat among customers of three Brazilian banks during the past week.
The concern is that the criminals behind the latest scam will try to widen their operation and target online account holders elsewhere in the world.
The new threat is yet another example of a crime known as 'phishing', which cost the UK banking industry £4.5 million in the nine months up to June this year.
In the past, crooks have sent emails to customers claiming to come from their bank and asking them to visit what turns out to be a fake Web site in order to 'update' their details.
Alex Shipp, senior anti-virus technologist at MessageLabs, said: "Most of the time the threat comes as an email that tries to lure you to a Web site claiming, for instance, you have gone overdrawn.
"But this one uses a different approach so that the next time you go to your bank online, you end up at a fake Web site.''
Emails detected so far appear to come from a stranger and have an empty subject line.
MessageLabs is advising all computer users to ensure they have the latest anti-virus software and security 'patches' that can be downloaded from the Internet.
