Many people have said that they don't see the breed in these attacks as being relevant. I think most of us are interested though, and if the press had just said "a dog" had attacked and killed a child, we would all be asking what was the breed.
I couldn't agree more.

Yes I know all dogs can bite, but when we hear of the severity of the attacks concerning certain types of dog, it makes me think something should now be done. Accidents will and do happen, but I read that maybe the dog was frightened of fireworks? if so, when was the last time you heard of any dog killing a child because of it? I have dealt with some truly terrified dogs in kennels, because of fireworks/thunder, they are with strangers too, but never have I know one attack with such ferocity. Fact is these types of dogs were bred to be powerful, highly strung, quickly "switched on" have no fear, no pain threshold and do not let go.

The DDA hasnt worked, something else should now come into force, a 5yr old girl and serious injuries to an adult is no small attack that should be defended whatever the reason IMO.
Dawn.

I also wondered Dawn, if a dog (any breed of dog) would kill somebody over fear of fireworks. I have had dogs that are terrified of fireworks, and I mean terrified, but they either snuggle up to me shaking or they will hide. Not saying all dogs would do this, just saying this is what my dogs have done in a fireworks situation.

I have always had a huge interest in bull breeds, and have always owned one at some stage of my life. I have probably owned 10 different bull breed dogs, and in those 10 dogs, never, ever have one of them bitten a child-or an adult-in a manor in which would be class as a vicious attack. I owned a British Bulldog, who admittedly did not like GSD for a reason I will never know, but never ever did he bite or show any agression to them in which I suspected he would bite. I understand I am explaining about dogs I have had, and all dogs are different, but I am giving examples to those who think ALL bull breeds are bad news.

I agree bull breeds were originally bred to be powerful, and I agree that even to this day, most bull breeds are highly strung, but this is the reason they need firm training from a very early age.

As a 'Bull breed' owner myself, I am now worried about what bad press this will bring to all known bull breeds. I personally do agree with Pitbulls being banned, I have my own personal reasons for this.

what ever the breed or reason it took place a little girl was killed.
believe me that this day will stay with every member of the family for the rest of their days, esp if there was some thing that could have prevented it.
unless you know the pain of losing a child and living day by day after their death you wont be able to imagine the pain they will be going through right now.
it may sound daft but i hope it turns out that it was a 1 off without warning etc or a medical reason behind it, they will be hurting enough without having to live with the guilt as well.

A little girl is dead and her grandmother is in hospital. Our thoughts should be with htem no on dissecting the ins and outs of a situation we won't ever know enough about to truly comment on it.
A dog is a dog and any dog can injure no matter how well socialised etc.
As for the comments about it being a 'pit bull type' it probably was...the whole term 'pit bull type' covers a lot doesn't it? As Moobli said if the breed hadn't been menioned we'd all be asking anyway.
A sad day.
We are getting more and more close to new legislation....we should ALL as dog owners be concerned.

I'm wondering if I've a twisted outlook on life, despite being terribly sorry for the little girl (words can can't express how I feel for her family) I also feel for the loss of the dog!

Am I the only one to feel that?

Not at all, it went through my mind too about the poor dog but I tried not to think about it.

I think I see what you mean. Again, although we don't know for sure and probably never will, chances are the dog was the victim of poor breeding/training and/or poor decisions made by the humans involved. When will people ever learn that dogs need to be treated with at least some respect?

The above's speculation, of course. What I know for certain is that the little girl and her family deserve our thoughts.

1. If they did receive a letter from the council regarding the dog (but no one knows why) then we have had members on here who have had them. It may just be for barking, or may just be neighbours who don't like dogs, we don't know.

2. The neighbours saying the dog was a menace and barking all day.........

The complaint that was received is reported in this news story....
