I am sorry for the child, the family and the dog but it is a sad fact of life that anything in the hands of those who do not understand or respect it can be lethal, this could be one of any number of things a dog and a car included.
Very well said Mini, couldn't agree more ! !

I'm so sorry to read of this poor child's fate.
My heart goes out to the poor family, esp the grandmother who was there at the time.

So soon after Xmas, with her new toys from Santa around the house. I can't even begin to imagine what they are going through.

This is a link to the rules in simple terms.
So you can own them with restrictions but not breed.

Just to clarify the above
This is one of the confusing things about thw DDA

It dosent say you cant own one but you cannot import or breed them so therefore as the act is 15 years old there shouldnt really be anyone left in UK legally in possesion of one.

Very sad for all concerned.

But I wonder what the dog was doing near the child - perhaps on her own? - at such an early time in the morning

It says there will be a full investigation - which I don't doubt, but I think it's unlikely that the public will get to know anymore.

A very sad start to 2007 for all of this childs family.

I, too, wondered what the child was doing up and outside at that time of the morning.

It is a sad fact that any bull terrrier, or cross of such, is always labelled a 'pit bull' by the uninformed press. I don't think it will ever change, the words 'pit bull' sensationalises the article.

What a very sad start to the New Year.

Minihaha - As others have said, your post sums it up in a nutshell.

And as noted above, the fact that there should be no more dogs of the pit bull 'type' in England because of the DDA just shows what a useless piece of legislation that was.

Here Here!
There is no need to state the name of the breed especially before it's even understood what the breed is. I am terribly sorry for this family it should never have happened and nobody knows why either but by stating 'pit bull' which it probably isn't anyway, the press are just sensationalising a tragic death of a little girl making matters far worse for her family.

It goes through me when I see children teasing dogs -because they know no better- and the parents doing nothing about it until the dog growls and then shouting at the dog. I'm not saying this is what happened here but I'm sure it counts for at least some percentage of dog attacks on children.

Sky News was just reporting that the dog may have been frightened due to fireworks going off in the area, though it's not confirmed. They also said it's a pit-bull type and the exact breed or cross is not yet known. The police dog handlers decided he was too dangerous to even try removing from the premises and he was destroyed at the house.

What a tragedy.

Thanks for that tillytails - I didn't even think of the fireworks but understand that that could have frightened him...

IF he was a pit bull cross or even full pit bull I bet it still won't deter idiots from buying these illegal dogs
