My 3 chooks, all gone

I'm absolutely devastated today. Got up this morning to find that my 3 girls have all been taken by a fox during the night I'm racked with guilt for not making sure their run was locked last night, but in all honestly, we've been keeping chickens for over 4 years now and the girls have been allowed free roaming for most of that, never being shut away, and we've never had a sighting of a fox There were feathers everywhere, and the only thing I can be thankful for is that they've obv taken the girls for food as there is no sign of bodies anywhere, so not indiscriminate killing as so often happens with foxes.

Not sure if I've got the heart to get any more after this. And to rub salt in, I went in to the coop and one of my araucanas had laid an egg for me, only my second in over a month

Aww Im so sorry, mine free range all day but go back inside to roost and are shut in for the night, we never had a problem with foxes till the one day I was out late and didnt get back in time to shut the run and house door, I had 5 point of lay and one older hen taken, no sign of the youngsters but the older hen had her head ripped off through the fencing and the body was left behind, I think i might have disturbed the fox

It's such a sickening feeling isn't it. If I do get some more, my lesson is well and truly learnt, and they will be locked away every night.

I'm so sorry

I lost 2 speckled sussex a few weeks ago to a fox. I was gutted as it was a years breeding plan down the drain It meant that I have to start from scratch.

It's a horrible feeling but don't feel guilty and I would definitely get some more.

So sorry to hear this, but hopefully you will get some more, and the lesson has been learned about shutting them away securely at night.
