Hyper mode, how to deal??

George is picking up his commands well & now knows to sit, come, down, stay without a problem but as soon as he gets excited it all goes out of the window. Is there any way to snap his brain out of that red mist?
If a dog passes or a child etc he's off barking & you just can't get his attention. He has only just had his first injections so I cannot take him out yet to socialize him.

Teach your dog impulse control.

Dogs often behave like this when they are confused.......... and tired.......... and over excited..............

the trick is knowing which.

Look at this, it may help.

How old is he?
Puppies really need to be getting out socalising as soon as possible
Before their injections they can still be outside and carried and taken to visit people with no dogs or dogs who are vaccinated

If he is already barking at strange things you will have to be careful with socalisation - keeping him at distances where he can take it in without him getting too hyper/scared
But it is really important that he gets out to see loads and loads of new things
anything you want him to be able to deal with as an adult dog

Hi, your George has a good grip on sit and stay etc is that just when you are in the house with no distractions?

What I've done was made sure my dog understood the commands then introduced distractions in the house so that the dog practised staying focussed on me despite the temptation of interesting things around her.

Then when that got reliable I moved us out into the garden and gradually introduced distractions outside. This was all before she was fully vaccinated. Some dogs react hyper to being under pressure so you would have to judge when George has had enough excitement and stress of trying to behave himself for longer than a puppy can mentally cope with manage.

It is good to get them socialised but when they are only young too much in a session can be over-stimulating and mentally tiring as smokeybear said.

After the dog was doing nicely I took her to places where it was as safe as possible from infections and not too stimulating and rewarded calm behaviour and taught her the word "calm".

She was such a friendly giddy thing that recall was the thing I needed to have in place more than anything else. I had to make myself much more interesting to her than anything in the outside world but without winding her up. A calm lower tone of voice worked better.

It worked for me with her but obviously there are other good suggestions which people have put forward that might work better for you. You'll get there!

Very interesting article. It sounds good & I do try & do most of that but once he gets wound up he is just like a runaway train. The only way to calm him is to take him into a small area & sit over him until he chills. I really think I need to get him out & walking but there are loads of street dogs here & as he has just had his first jabs I am a bit worried. I'm also not sure how he will react to other dogs.

Do you take your shoes off before you come in the house?

If you do not you are bringing into the house the same germs your dog will be exposed to outdoors.

Yes we do. It is almost compulsary here in turkey. However george does spend most of the time in the garden. It is fenced & he's kept away from the gate but we only let him into the porch as the cat rules the house & the vet said not to mix them yet. The vet also said not to take him near any street dogs yet so thats why I am not walking him but I think the boredom could be the problem.

George is a bit heavy for that now. He is 4mnths+ & getting bigger by the day. He walked into the garden starving about a month ago & would not leave. After trying & failing to find him a new home we decided to take him on even though we know nothing about dogs.
