NEUTERING IS NOT SO NEUTRAL;With Holistic vet Nick Thompson

There is a growing trend towards spaying and neutering dogs as young as 6 weeks of age. There is an ever growing amount of evidence that points towards neutering and spaying dogs can have a direct effect on both their physical and mental development. It is becoming more apparent that frustration, lack of attention, and puppy like behaviour, appears to be far more prevalent in dogs that have been castrated and spayed at a younger age, rather than those that were allowed to mature naturally before attempting this operation. Nick will be discussing new research that he feels contradicts the prevailing view of gonadectomy being a relatively benign procedure. He will be sharing studies which he feels demonstrated the behavioural impact of neutering dogs where they were found to be more aggressive, fearful, excitable, noise phobic and less trainable than intact dogs.

He will also be looking at the physical effects such as significant differences in bone growth, and the increased risk of certain fatal cancers in neutered dogs.

It has also been observed that young female dogs that show aggressive tendencies towards owners, especially before the age of six months, often demonstrate increased aggression after spaying. Spaying removes the production of progesterone, which is a natural calming hormone and a Serotonin up lifter. Spaying may therefore escalate any observable aggressive behaviour, either to humans or other dogs.
