David Ryan Seminar 13 October, Guildford

The Holistic Nature of Canine Behaviour and Training Problems

Greyfriars Rehabilitation and Hydrotherapy Centre, Greyfriars Farm Veterinary Centre, Hogs Back, Guildford, Surrey, GU3 1AG, 13th October 2012

Exploring the nature of dogs, how they maintain emotional balance, why they fall into problem behaviours and the principles behind some simple solutions.

Behaviour and training problems are often directly linked to the expression of normal behaviour patterns of the domestic dog, but what is “normal” domestic dog behaviour?

This one day seminar explores the true nature of dogs, how their inherited patterns of behaviour contribute directly to their ability to cope with modern life, why training and behaviour problems develop and the principles that can be applied to change those behaviours for the benefit of dog and owner alike. Including case studies, anecdotes and the opportunity for audience discussion.

The Holistic Nature of Canine Behaviour Problems
with David Ryan, PG Dip CABC, CCAB

9.30 arrivals for a 10.00 start : ends 4pm

At Greyfriars Rehabilitation and Hydrotherapy Referral Centre
Price : £70 (including refreshments and a light lunch)

Certificate of Attendance : 6 hours CPD

Dogs are not little people in fur coats nor are they wolves in disguise. Canine behaviour can be complex and the reasons for the ways that dogs behave can be difficult to unravel sometimes. They have a completely different perspective on the world to us and therefore a different way of relating to it. Their seeing, hearing, scenting, tasting and feeling senses are all set up differently to us, as is their brain. This seminar will include case studies, stories and audience discussion. It will look at the reality of normal behaviour patterns in dogs and how these inherited patterns contribute to the way they cope with living with humans and other species, why behavioural problems develop and what can be done to change these behaviours.

About David Ryan:

Following 26 years as a police dog handler and Home Office accredited instructor, David achieved a post-graduate diploma, with distinction, in companion animal behaviour counselling from the University of Southampton. He is also independently certificated as a Clinical Animal Behaviourist by the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour and is on the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. From 2009 to early 2012 he was Chair of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and still serves on the Association’s business committee. He is a visiting lecturer on Newcastle University’s MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare and serves on the Accreditation Committee of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, which provides him with strong links to those conducting the most up-to-date research in canine behaviour. As a veterinary referred companion animal behaviour counsellor he deals with a wide range of canine behaviour problems, having helped over 100 cases in 2011 alone. He believes that dog behaviour is like any other discipline in that if it is studied and practiced you can acquire a great understanding of it. Also like other disciplines, the depth of study and practice is integral to the understanding.
