I would say that if it is a good puppy class and the trainers have up to date knowledge then they should actively encourage them to take them after their first jabs! I wouldn't use one who suggested I wait!

Not necessarily, I prefer to start vaccinations at my own vet, to ensure pup does not have to double up on vaccine due to incompatibility of said vaccines.

As long as you know the other dogs are up to date with their vaccines, it should be fine.

Me too! That happened with my last pup and I had three options:
1. try and find a vet using the same vaccine (the breeder lived a good two hours away from me)
2. start the course again (didn't want to do that)
3. have the booster done at own vet with a different make of vaccine and run the risk of neither drug company accepting any responsibility if anything went wrong. I went with this option as the vaccine is the same stuff anyway.

I would definitely ask a breeder not to give the first vaccine in future.

To be honest I would rather be safe than sorry and would not risk socialisation with any other dogs until after the second jab.

Enjoy that puppy!!!!

Those of us with more than one dog have no choice and rarely is there a problem. Mollie was still walked all through Betty's pre vac period Betty even came with us but was carried. No choice as I say when more than one dog is involved.

I had this dilemma. It's fine to let your dog meet healthy, vaccinated dogs. While most adult dogs aren't vaccinated for parvo and lepto, meeting the dogs is not a real way to infect your puppy.

Contact with feces usually causes parvo and contact with urine usually causes lepto, which are the two main threats to puppies.

I'd not suggest taking the dog to a dog park or to random places like that... but I think it's fine to take the dog and meet a few healthy dogs.

Hi I thought the card would tell the vet what vaccine they were given previously.I find the whole thing about vaccines so difficult, have spoken to people in the dog world, who reckon having boosters is just lining the vets pockets.Me I would rather keep them updated, but there are two differant schools of thought and it really confuses you.Gemini54

I would rather they were protected too. My mums old GSD x missed one booster shot when they moved from Southampton to Cardiff. Two years later he became seriously ill with hepatitis, spent a week in the vets and it was touch and NGO if he would survive. Thankfully he did and lived for another five years. We're pretty sure he picked up something when he missed his booster and it lay dormant in him.

Hi we have a responsibility to our pets,to care for them and protect them,I think it would weigh very heavily on my conscience if I didnt give them all the protection they need, but luckily your GSD pulled through.Gemini54

Absolutely yes! Provided you don't put him on the ground, IMO it is absolutely essential that pups are socialised asap, regardless of whether they have had their injections or not, or regardless of whether they are saying hello to unvaccinated dogs. Just keep him in your arms, or on your lap, table, whatever, and if needs to go down to go to the loo, I used to use those puppy pads.
