In the news: Tyson's death on my conscience

Tyson's death on my conscience

The Dangerous Dogs Act is bad law. It is high time it was amended

Roy Hattersley
Monday July 4, 2005
The Guardian

Tyson is probably dead by now. I refer not to the heavyweight boxer but to a pit bull terrier of the same name who, unlike his brutal human namesake, has never torn off anybody's ear. Indeed he has never torn off anybody's anything. He is an elderly dog of pacific disposition. Yet he is, in the ghastly legal phrase, to be "destroyed" on the orders of the West London magistrates court. He has been convicted of not wearing a muzzle in public.

It was the Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991 that stipulated that pit bull terriers, whatever their conduct or character, must wear muzzles - thus proving the truth of the old adage about giving a dog a bad name. Unfortunately, from the point of view of the owners, not to mention the dogs, the government of the day had difficulty in finding a name that properly defined the breed it wanted to penalise and prohibit. The act applies to "the type known as the pit bull terrier"...

i read about this story about a week ago,, it both angered and upset me then and it still angers and upsets me now!!

this poor dog was condemned to death having done NOTHING wrong!! and why?? because its owner could not be bothered to put a muzzle on him as stated by the law,, and what a law it is, to penalise all dogs of a specific breed because of what a handful of the breed did,, its truly upsetting,, i feel so sorry for poor tyson but atleast now he can run free at the bridge without being judged because of his breed.

run free tyson,, you will be free from judgement and pain at the bridge, with lots of doggie friends to play with x x x xx

That, indeed, is enough to make you angry and sad at the same time. Damn politicians and their stupid legislation concocted because of some tabloid 'outcry' over a sensationalised issue! nanny state! mutter mutter mutter........
