He won't stop crying !!!!

Hi we have a 12 wk old boy Staffordshire Bull terrier called Ollie. He is absolutely gorgeous , he is a tiger blue with piercing blue eyes . We are having a problem taking him out for exercise , he literaly cries all the time . This only happens when we take him outside of the home boundaries he is fine in the garden. Even when he is off the lead he still cries and won't leave our side. He only stops when he comes in contact with another dog then he just wants to play. Has anyone heard of this before and how can we stop him ? We just want him to be happy

Hi, sorry to hear you are having problems.

I take it your pup appears nervous when crying? what is his body language like? can you describe it at all?

If he's like this because he's very nervous, it may be because he's really worried about being outside and finds it all too much.

Sometimes owners keep pups in due to vaccinations (it's a good idea to take them out by carrying them before all vaccinations are finished, so they do start to get socialised). If a pup is kept in, then suddenly taken out it can scare them. Occasionally the pup may have a negative experience which frightens it, even something like a car backfiring, we as humans we may not notice.

Just a few thoughts. I'd suggest a good puppy socialisation class (see www.apdt.co.uk or www.puppyschool.co.uk) which will really help your pup and if the crying continues, I'd also suggest a vet visit as he may be in pain.

Hi Jaxback a couple of points, some dogs are naturally more vocal than others, perhaps Ollie is unsure/lacks confidence .
Do you go to any puppy training classes, that would help Ollie to gain confidence and to meet other puppies. Try asking at the local vets if they know of any, also look on the 'APDT' site for classes.
What do you do when Ollie cries? Do you speak to him in a sympathetic voice? If so I wouldn't in fact I would ignore the cying altogether and just talk to him in a bright confident tone then he should grow out of the crying .

Hi Thanks for your insight. Ollie has been very well socialised both with humans and animals I think he gets worse when my kids walk in front or run ahead , could it be pack related behaviour ? If he has been out without the kids as soon as he comes in he has a drink and then runs around as if to look for all of us. I have 4 children under the age of ten.

I have a cavie and she has always done the exact same thing as your puppy is doing...and she is 2 now!

I think it's down to lack of confidence - well this is what my vet put it down to.

He sounds lovely! I bet he's very sweet

Re classes, I expect you will want to go along to the same classes as those your friends attend but before you do, have a read of this:

http://www.apdt.co.uk/training_class.htm

as it gives info on how to choose a good class. Some are run very badly and many owners are being cheated because they can't tell the difference. This article will show you how and put you in the driving seat :smt002
