I personally could not bare to have Loki in a diferent room at night let alone outside I would miss our morning cuddles in bed far too much!
I do however know someone who keeps one dog inside and one out side at night, the reason for this is she has a bitch and dog both intact and was worried about them getting up to anything at night when the bitch was in season, they are mother and son so this would be a big problem! She considered just putting him in the kennel when she was in season to be too confusing for himso he has slept in the kennel from about 4 months I think he now finds it far too hot in the house at night times and wont settle on the occasions he has been inside for the night. He has a heated kennel and is quite happy to go into it at night times. He is in all day and evening and only goes into his kennel to sleep I think in this instance it is not much different for him then being in a crate in the kitchen at night.
I agree with everyone on the safety aspects it would have to be a very secure kennel (My friends is very secure)

My Bella is 8.1/2 weeks old and I wouldn't dream of her sleeping outside on her own, she's too tiny and my baby. She's only just left her mummy and to put her outside I just couldn't do.

It's not something I've ever considered, so my initial reaction was, why? but suppose that could also be, why not?
But if you have the room for them to be inside during the daytime what is the reason for putting them outside during the night.
Where outside would they be sleeping? in a kennel? shed?

Max is crated in the kitchen at night. He's never been allowed upstairs, or in the bedrooms/on the bed and he never will be!

When we're out during the day, Max is kept in the garage. We've made a nice little pad for him by sectioning off half the garage, putting a secondary crate in there and paper down for wee's etc.

When we move to our new house, we've got an outside kennel/run for him for when we're out, although he will always sleep in the kitchen and be welcome indoors whenever...

I personally don't have a problem with it.
If I had more land, I would have a kennel and a large run outside for when I am not at home, as I think it's far better to be outside, than cooped up inside.

As long as the dog gets enough stimulation/exercise, then I think it's ok.
If it's just for when the dog is sleeping (e.g night time etc), that what difference does it make if it's inside or outside, as long as it's comfortable.

My boss has 4 dogs (3 borders, 1 lab), and they all live outside - have never been in the house, but they are very well behaved, toilet trained, and very sociable both with people and other dogs.

my girls have always been outside since they were 4 weeks old, so when they came to me they were honestly quite happy and secure as it was nothing different to them. It has just started pouring with rain, where are they? Playing outside in the rain!!! They don't seem to have noticed it has got a bit wet!!!
If they were in the house they would not have the space to play like they do, they get loads of stimulation off each other, are very well socialised already and are friendly. They do bark if someone is outside but only a couple to let whoever know They Are There And Are Watching. I really think it is how they are brought up and socialised that decides whether they are overly protective. If they are kept outside and never meet people and other animals they are bound to be different from a dog that lives in the house.
But some dogs that live in houses can be the same. It is the owners and the amount of socialisation that makes the difference not whether they live in or out.
I think a bigger dog is far better in an outside run with shelter than cooped up in a small house or flat and crated.

Yes actually I can see your point - if the dogs are happier and used to being outside then why not. My rabbits are outside all through the summer and they are only small and they are fine so why not a dog. I suppose it depends on the breed though. I think like you say arctic dogs might be happier outside. I wouldn't like to see a dog unhappy outside though or maybe a small breed being kept outside because I think they aren't as tough as the larger breeds.

In the really hot weather I might have considered this owning two very fluffy bears, but then I wouldn't be able to sleep all night for fear of them getting stolen etc. and anyway, the reason I got my dogs was to enjoy them and have them as part of the family, so they sleep in my bedroom. If I lived in the middle of nowhere, could have a 10ft. high fence all around the place, then yes I might consider leaving all the doors open for them to come and go as they pleased - maybe

As for a new puppy - NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS, I'm sure of that!
