GSD recall issue

Hi

we have a 9mth boxer which she is fine, about a month ago we got a 12mth old black gsd from the rspca (rescue), he is fine will sit, wait etc, the problem is when of the lead he wont recall if there is any other dogs near by (no matter how far) he will be off like a shot to play, have tried treats and positive rewards but to no avail, can anyone give us some guidance.

cheers

I`d go back to basics and teach recall with rewards in the house and garden. And until recall is solid, keep him on a long lead or line when out.
Since he`s going off to play with other dogs, you could play more with him and make that part of his training as well.
He sounds like fun!

he has recall when at home on the lead and off the lead, and is played with all the time, it is only when another dog is about he will just say, lets play and recall go's out the window, when no dogs about he will sit and wait off the lead and recall to the sitting position on the left hand side of me.

Well if he does it at home but not around other dogs, you'll have to practice when you are around other dogs. Get some friends who have dogs, and practice, practice and practice calling him away from them with treats. The problem is, this all should have been done in puppyhood, which of course, your boy didn't have the correct training back then, no fault of his own of course, so it just makes it all the harder for you now, but with perseverence it will work! HOnest!

Another good idea is to get him focused on a ball or his favourite toy, and make YOU far more exciting than those other dogs when it comes to recalling him! Call him in a high pitched, silly voice, make him WANT to come away from them coz you have something more interesting, that's the name of the game with these dogs! Good luck
