Immovable Object meets Irresistible Force?

In this case, the irresistible force = any other dog

immovable object = my Lab, Dexter

Recall is improving slowly. But I'm not sure what to do when I recall Dex and he (on a long line) just SITS, plants himself, and stares at another dog in the distance.

He is so strong that I cannot 'reel' him in, he refuses to come for treats, he ignores toys. I have tried running backwards and instigating a 'chase' game as part of the recall - no joy. I have tried gently shaking the long line - he ignores it.

I have tried to make myself 'more' interesting than the other dog - again, epic fail!

If I recall him at any other time, it's fine - he runs right to me.

But when he sees another dog, that is IT. He just sits there and will not budge

Does anyone have any advice for what I can do in this specific situation?

Thanks so much

I`d sit down and wait. Take a book. Don`t say a word or move until he mooches back. Then reward and continue on your merry way.

lol sounds good to me

also just keep working on his recal away from other dogs, slowly getting closer to dogs - but still at a big enough distance that he isnt planting himself

I have the same problem with Louie.

Try a this way command, this helped me loads.
But C&D's advice has never failed for me so I'd take hers over mine

You might want to consider a "stop" rather than a recall, IF it is solid and he just lies down and watches.

This means you still have control, but he also has to exert some self discipline.

Just a thought......................
