Swollen ankle - what should I do?

I got an insect bite on my ankle two days ago and it's been itching like mad.

This afternoon the area is REALLY swollen and red and quite burning/tight.

What does it mean? Is it infected? I've never had anything like this but my ankle is very swollen!!

hello

i get abad reaction to insect bites and stings, I suggest you make an appointment with doctor to get it looked at as it may well be infected or just a bad reaction to whatever horrid bug bit you !

hope its better soon

Dani's right, get the doc or nurse to check, in case it is infected.

I know I react to insect bites, so I always have an antihistamine cream ready to rub on them, should I get one.

I've never had this before so didn't have a clue what to do. I better call first thing tomorrow.

Pidge,

Rest, ice and elevate. Call your GP in the morning for an appointment. He may well prescribe antibiotics if he believes it to be infected but in the meantime take antihistamine (tablets, cream - one or the other - not both).

You'll be absolutely fine. The reason I know this is because.....

Both caused by nasty bites. Both ankles affected. Both lower legs swollen to twice normal size. Both very tight, red and shiny. Have antibiotics since GP visit this morning.

Ouch Laura that looks really sore. I have the same trouble every year. I ended up in hospital once because I had red lines creeping up my legs
