fight@aids.. is this legit or what?

FightAIDS@Home is the first biomedical distributed computing project ever launched. It is run by the Olson Laboratory at The Scripps Research Institute, and uses your computer to assist fundamental research to discover new drugs, using their growing knowledge of the structural biology of AIDS by sending out individual calculations to thousands or hundreds of thousands of individual computers. The results of such computations should not only identify the best candidate drugs to keep the AIDS virus at bay, they will also give scientists greater insights more generally into the nature of drug resistance.

FightAIDS@Home, which has been run independently by the Olson Laboratory for the past two and a half years, joined World Community Grid on November 21, 2005. World Community Grid is a public computing grid with the mission of running projects that will benefit humanity.

World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. IBM Corporation has donated the hardware, software, technical services and expertise to build the infrastructure for World Community Grid and provides free hosting, maintenance and support.
This was posted on a bulletin board, and I wondered if its genuine, or just a scam?
Can anyone advise please...

Thanks in advance

Hevvur, can you explain how its supposed to work, cos its all complete jargon to me. From what I can gather, the program links my pc to these researchers pc's.. and then what? what benefit (if not a scam) does this have to the researchers?

I'm a bit confused...

I think the cancer ones are the most widespread
i stopped doing it because my computer i had before this one would crash if i did anything but word processing on it
i'll have to find another one because you use it just like a screensaver and it sends back data to the lab over the internet (don't know if it works on dial up or not)
it's well worth getting involved with
