Cockers smelly jowls,Can anyone help?

Hi my cocker is ten and recently began to smell around the mouth i thought it was her teeth/breath so took her to the vets who told me it was an infection in her jowl in her skin folds under her mouth, she has had 2 different courses of antibiotics but is still there but is getting no worse,i dry it after drink as often as i can but wondered if there was anything anyone could recommend,i.e. an antiseptic cream, powders etc,Thanks in advance for any advice

Hello Kathryn and welcome that sounds like Lip Fold Dermatitis. It can be quite difficult to clear.

I would go back to the vet, there are various washes that can help .

Hi Kathryn I mentions returning to the vet because sometime bacteria can be involved requiring treatment that can not be obtained over the counter.

Maybe a swab is needed to check for bacteria if you have had two courses of ABs without success.

Keeping the area clean and dry after meals and drinking is important. For the moment I would bathe with quite a strong a saline solution one tablespoon of salt to a pint of boiled water. Soft kitchen roll is good for drying the area.

Its a long shot but have you tried daily cleans with diluted maleseb? It is antifungal and anti bacterial and you can use it to clear up these on paws and in ears, so might be useful here?

No I havent tried anything apart from keeping it dry as the vet originally said not too as I would be making it more wet??
Where would I buy what you suggested from?
Thanks
