You have a drs appointment, i think the best thing would be to go alone and talk to the dr about your concerns. Ask for a referral to a paediatrician (dr should refer you to the correct one at a child development centre or similar)
I would also contact the special educational needs department of your council and ask (insist) that your son needs to be assessed by the relevant people.

In the long term, if your son does get a diagnosis of aspergers, you again need to contact your local education authority and request a statement of special educational needs is undertaken which basically means your son will be entitled to extra provisions/help in the education system.

It can be quite overwhelming- all the appointments and assessments with the feeling of getting nowhere, but it is worth it in the end.
I fought from when my son was 9 months old- nobody believed me that there was 'something not quite right' with his behaviours etc, it took until he was just over 3 years to get his diagnosis of autism. He is now nearly 4 and we have just submitted his request for a statement of special ed needs.
It shouldnt take this long for you and your son as he is older.

Good luck and keep us posted and if you need anything feel free to PM me.

thankyou, it does all seem very overwhelming, hopefully we will get there in the end....where ever there is lol

And yes I will keep this thread updated xx

Just a bit of an update.....

Drs went very well, he listened and asked questions.

He has referred William to a child Psychologist, for his anxiety and poss aspergers. He said to go to the school with regards the possible Dyspraxia.

I have an appointment with the head tomorrow morning.

Had a couple of issues I needed to mention and spoke to the deputy....didn't go too well. She was very defensive.

Basically a student teacher had been helping out last year.....several months ago and had been joking with the kids and had told them that glue has tiny pins in It was PVA glue.....William has not used glue since now I know why but I have to admit I had a chuckle about it later. He just takes thinks so literal. So I just warned Deputy that he was getting over this and she basically a) denied that there was ever a student teacher in class...there def was I saw him!! b) that anybody would ever say that to a kid!!! well sorry but I believe William he never lies!! And she said why on earth did he believe him!! so I just said William believes anything his peers tell him

So obviously the head has not passed our concerns down the line..........

Wish me luck for tomorrow

Good luck for tomorrow, sounds like things are progressing. I would suggest you get a notebook and write down who you see when, and the result of any conversation and any action points to be followed up. I would also press for dates when you can expect answers on follow ups....Just so that the ball stays rolling and you have an accurate timeline.....

So glad to hear the ball has started to roll for you and William. as others have said keep a log/journal of the whole process at least if a query arises you can look back on this for any confirmation you need. unfortunately i think some school heads/teachers are inexperienced in such issues and out of their depths so hopefully Williams journey will be a learning experience that they can call on if something like this arises again, good luck today.

Well another successful meeting

The Head was brilliant, she listened and commented and actually agreed on some points as she had seen some herself.

So she is requesting the Educational Psychologist sees him again, also the Parent Liason Officer is being involved and also possibly a health Mentor. She said William is a lovely boy and what a great job I was doing as he is a very confident little boy.

She almost had me in tears, saying that she realises it must be exhausting at home but she will get us as much help as she can

So just waiting now for child psychologist and Educational Psychologist to get in touch

Fantastic news........support from all camps and referrals to people who can help. Now write it all down and keep notes of dates etc as the process can take time but has certain recommended time frames they have to work to. Don't let them spin it out!

Supermum!

Totally agree with Fudgeley. My friend has a son who has aspergers. The school were the first to point out that there was a problem. He is a bright lad too but was struggling with relationships and any changes, even down to moving the seating plan in the classroom etc. My friend went to the doctors on her own and he arranged for her son to be seen by an educational psychologist. There are many differences of children along the autism spectrum so the other member is right in querying how much help you will be able to get in school. This will depend on how much help he is deemed to need. My friends boy is now very happy, at a school that can cater to his needs, with smaller class sizes and has enabled him to cope a lot better with changes overall. He is now 12 but it took a while for him to be assessed etc so have patience. Best of luck and be assertive when talking to your doc as they can be very dismissive sometimes with us mums !!
