Why are UK hols so expensive? (dog related, honest)

I fancied a short break with my son and the dogs so have been trying to find somewhere to go, in reach of Essex. (Norfolk, etc)
Because we need 2 bedrooms, the cheapest I can find is £500 for a week. Add fares and food and I`d have little change from £700 which seems a bit exorbitant for a week away. Bear in mind that we`d be going out of school holiday-time and don`t want luxury! No wonder parents take their kids abroad.
Am I out of touch? Is £500+ for a week in June reasonable?

Because Britains a rip off! To be honest I'm getting quite disillusioned with people, whilst I understand that people have to earn money to live (don't we all) I think some people in this country are getting far too greedy.
I'd recommend going camping, it's a lot cheaper!

I think it seems reasonable. Even if it is not the school holidays, May to August is peak time for holiday lettings.

I'll check with my parents later today; they are going to Norfolk in August for a week, renting a small cottage.

We paid about £500 for our week away in Wales during half term and I have to say it was worth every penny!

Take food with you in cool bags from home then you're not buying an additional shop. Also means you can make packed lunches when you're going out walking or whatever for the day.

We booked through Quality Cottages and if you scout around their website there's some good deals to be had. They also offer a small family discount so we stayed in a cottage that sleeps 4 but got a £50 discount because there were only 2 of us plus the dog.

i think prices have gone up a load this last year.
We were thinking about centre parks again, we have been before and you can take dogs, but it works out at nearly 2K for four days!! Bloody ridiculous!

We were also looking at holiday cottages but the decent ones are way too expensive too.

It's cheaper for me to book a week at an apartment in Spain than it is for a week here. Only thing that makes the difference is we aren't paying flights for 2 kids and adults, just petrol money here and we can take any dogs with us depending on where we book.

Personally I'd take the hol with the dogs over the foreign hol anyday.

I have to say that cost is the same as a week on a private game reserve in SA!

You could go on a 2 week trip to the Caribbean for that.

Are you quoting honeysmummy?

I did a 10 day trip to South Africa, private game reserve, all expenses paid (group trip, so paying for just me) for just over £1000.
