Reporting Neglect and Abuse

The Pit Bull is probably the most abused and neglected breed of dog in existence. Because of the unfair treatment so many Pit Bulls face it is inevitable that a certain percentage of these will act out against humans. This is not because of the breed but because of irresponsible ownership.

In order to combat the negative image the American Pit Bull Terrier ( APBT ) has it is our responsibility as responsible Pit Bull dog owners to reduce the level of mistreatment the breed faces by those who are irresponsible.

It is important to note there is a difference between neglect and abuse and the handling of each can vary depending on the situation involved.

Neglect is often a product of being unable to take care of one's Pit Bulls. This can be due to causes of financial difficulties, physical difficulties, or simple ignorance.

Other times it can be simply that the owner does not care for the suffering the animal faces and/or in general has a callous disregard for life.

In cases of neglect where such scenarios as above are indicated then the first step we can take is finding out the exact situation and trying to first work with the Pit Bull's owner to develop a situation where their American Pit Bull Terrier ( APBT ) is no longer neglected.

This may be as simple as offering your scrap food to the dog so it may eat, assisting the individual in caring for the dog if they face a physical impairment, or simply educating them on proper care and community expectations.

If such methods do not work it is then our duty as good citizens and proper custodians of the breed to make a report to our local humane society or local authorities for their intervention.

Abuse on the other hand is a a conscious effort to cause harm. This may take the form of directly causing harm to the Pit Bull dog or by placing the Pit Bull in a fight.

Numerous studies have shown the negative psychological impact such actions have in humans. This callous disregard for animal welfare has proven to be linked to other crimes against humanity such as domestic violence, assault, violent sexual deviance, murder, rape and more.

Such abuse is against the law and without enforcing the law on such perpetrators this directly contributes to the negative image so many have of the American Pit Bull Terrier ( APBT ), endangers the general public, and leads to politicians making rash knee jerk decisions in order to gain political favoritism.

If you know of such abuse it is your responsibility to report this to the proper legal authorities and to make sure that legal action is taken. Many times such complaints are overlooked which directly lead to new laws such as Breed Specific Legislation ( BSL ) to be developed which steal away individuals rights to ownership of this great breed. When responsible animal welfare laws exist and are enforced this is the single best method of reducing attacks by Pit Bulls and helping to improve the image of the American Pit Bull Terrier ( APBT ) dog breed.

If your local authorities are not enforcing the animal welfare laws that exist then you should note this lack of enforcement and when dog attacks happen educate the victims on their right to civil litigation against such legal bodies.

When legal bodies are held accountable for "not" doing their job when it comes to enforcing animal welfare laws they will start to change their ways and the perceived need for developing Breed Specific Legislation ( BSL ) will greatly diminish if not disappear all together.

Please read and sign the following petition to prosecute a fighter in OK making it clear abuse will not be tolerated: http://www.petitiononline.com/LeFlore/petition.html
