puppy classes and lead probs

puppy classes went really well last night. We have two trainers for some reason, and one of em is usually a bit annoying, i think she thinks indie is dog aggressive. Anyway, last night it was jus indie and anothe kelpie and she got to see how nice indie really is. And she also got to see that when she growls shes jus over excited and wants to play.

Anyway, we were mving the dogs round to some music doing some heel work... and indie just refused to pay attention as she wanted to play with theother dog... no toy or treat was gonna be good enough. So if u can picture this, we had the trainer, then me and indie then the woman with her dog carrying him.. Strangely enough,.... indie calmed down and did what she was told and jus kept her eye on the other dog
very funny to watch anyway.lol.

we only have one week left now, so im hoping OH wil fund for the next set of classes as id like to keep her socialised and also get more practise and do more advanced stuff.

We are still trying to tackle the pulling on the way home from walks.. there doesnt seem to be any solution? She doesnt get anythin when she gets home and we even bring water with us. But she jus tracks her way home. Funily enough this has come in handy when we have got lost. The trainer has suggested a halti lead, that wraps round my waist. They think perhaps im sending off some kind of signal to make her pull. So we are gonna try competely hands off and with a cd player so i dont even pay attention to her. what do u think? They also said dont use an extendable lead as this will make her test her limits, she wont know how far she can go and will therefore cause her to pull

Hi Jenny
I had a bull terrier that pulled i never got her out of it i tried allsorts. I put a halti on her and she got it of and bit it in half within seconds. So i thought it must have been to big, so i got her a smaller one and she did the same thing after that i gave in. I wish you all the luck.

I use a half check on Star but its nylon with no chain. I find it works better than a normal collar.

here is a pic of the kind I have for Star. It does not choke like a choke chain.

Liberty used to pull anawful lot, so everytime she pulled I stopped walking, it was painfully slow process

In the end i got a harness for her, and that worked a treat

Hi Jenny,

I have found that some dogs are pullers and some are not. We have spent a small fortune in the past with Kip and trying to contorl her pulling, she is like a steam train. She is 3½ years old now and I dont think she will ever change. We have brought our dogs up in the same way and Cassy is an excellent walker on the lead reallu realy good as have all our past dogs. Kip will pull until her eyes are red.

I was always told the best method is the stop start method, I am sure your trainer must have explainde this as its one of the most common and apparently most effective. It is very time consuming and although it did not work for me I have heard several people say how successful this method has been.

I never found a halti ever any good especially with Kip as she insisted on dragging her face along the ground. We tried clicker and you can actually buy leads that wrap around the waist (watch for marathons and runners use them with their dogs). Whaetever you decide at least you are doing the right thing by taking her to training classes I would imagine the trainers are the best people to speak too but if they have not mentioned the stop start method then ask them about it.

result! After trying indie on the haltie lead.. just a lead that ties round my waist and clips to her harness... it worked a treat! She was pulling at first, but i had it shortened so she had to walk next to me anyway, but enough room for her to be able to keep it slack. anyway, i completely ignored her unless she was slack and clicked whenever she was, stopped and treat. Eventually, near the end of the walk, she was walking by my side on a slack lead and every now and then pulling.

But cos it doesnt hurt when she pulls like this, i dont get all wound up and pull her back. Whereas on a lead, it hurts my hands and i get all annoyed and im constantly pulling her back into position.

So lets hope this keeps working. and even if it doesnt, at least the walk is more enjoyable for me by not hurting me. altho she does cause me to trip overher alot
