Overpronation

Just got back from my physio session and turns out that following my fracture I now overpronate basically meaning that my foot collapses at the arch, and rolls inwards, rotating my whole leg.

He doesn't think there's really going to be anything they can do to correct it, just a case of getting some good trainers and/or some orthotics - great

Sorry to hear you are having more problems.

I would now ask your GP to refer you to a specialist foot/ankle surgeon in orthopaedics for an opinion on your foot. At the very least you can be referred for some specialist orthotics.

The physiotherapist I'm seeing specialises in knees and ankles which is a blessing! He's costing me the earth but I trust him completely as he's been fantastic with me. I first saw him in April last year and have been working with him ever since in conjunction with my hydrotherapist.

He said that in most cases where the overpronation was the cause of other problems he would be looking at a cure situation, but with me it's most likely going to be preventatives, although he's not saying that it definately won't cure. Mainly because it's the fracture to my kneecap and the way in which it has healed which has cause the overpronation

However if I can get some orthotics to fit all of my shoes and a decent pair of trainers for work, which I've just ordered as they didn't have my size in store, it will help the problem no end as it will take the pressure off of my ankles and knees by placing them in the correct position.

The majority of the population over-pronates to some degree, people with a neutral foot fall are rarer and supinators (when the foot rolls outwards) are even rarer.
Plenty of over-pronators run and play sport with no problems as long as they have supportive running shoes and possibly orthotics.
Some degree of pronation is desirable as it absorbs impact but unchecked over-pronation can lead to achilles problems and plantar fasciitis. (Been there, done that).

I have the same problem, but in addition to a problem with a tendon in my ankle (it flips out from where it should be, can't remember the proper term ) and one leg is a bit shorter than the other. All this means that I kept falling over - very embarassing .

Initially the hospital orthotics made me some insoles which were AWFUL - only fitted in one pair of boots and gave me loads of blisters on the instep of my feet

Anyway, I ended up being referred to a podiatrist by my physio and they made me much much better insoles, smaller, comfier and just better . She also found that all these problems made my skeleton twist, and all these problems were sorted by a pair of insoles!! Can't do without them now, and no falling over!!!

If I were you, I'd ask to be referred to a podiatrist straight away, it saves so much messing about and they really know their stuff

Paula

PS I realise all this makes me sound like a really old lady, but honestly I'm only 39
