My dog has never taken the slightest notice of the rubber stick used...
..so why is it there ? .... if it's all about the fun of only biting the padded sleeve then why have the big padded whole body suit and a ruddy great rubber stick ..unless of course it's REALLY all about projecting some kind of 'ard nut' image ....because if it's truly about demonstrating control, agility and responsiveness then where are the Border Collies, the Australian Shepherds or the Smooth Collies ?- it seems to me that much of this 'sport' is about the macho image the bite work projects ...I wonder if it were done with Poodles ( who after all are eminently trainable ) would it be as popular with those that like to use a dog as a form of canine Viagra ?

we all know what happens to breeds that fall victim to this type of mentality the sorry fall out is in our rescue kennels up and down the country - do I want to see the BSD on the dangerous dog list and going the same way ? - hell no !

Working Trials also includes a bitework stake, PD so would you like that banned too?
....YES YES YES !!!

There are Border Collies with Schutzhund Qualifications in the UK and at least one Labrador............

Smooth Collies are not ON the leader board in Obedience, Working Trials etc so unlikely to appear in Schutzhund, especially as their numbers are not exactly large.........

ps One of my dreams is to compete in Protection with a Standard Apricot Poodle in full Show clip.

And of course there are plenty of clips on You Tube of BORDER TERRIERS and JACK RUSSELL TERRIERS and a CHIHUAHUA training in Schutzhund, they cannot compete as they are not on the list of permitted breeds of the FCI on the continent.

Hope that helps

ETA lots of examples of men (and women) who obviously are MACHO and need penis extension Especially with such MACHO breeds as the Labraodor and JRT

It's there to test the dogs courage and if the dog was scared of the stick then he would fail the test. It was afterall invented as a breed test! My dog takes no notice of it because he has the correct nerves so something like a stick wouldn't bother him.

I think you are getting your sports confused because no one wears a bite suit (thick padded suit) AND a sleeve. Helpers in Sch sometimes were protective trousers to protect them from the dogs nails as they can scratch as they jump up.

..in the same way that 'mr macho' was testing for courage with his fireworks test ?

tell me ...why do you have to test your presumably pet dog for courage by threatening it with a stick ?- how is that more acceptable than this ?

http://www.dogsey.com/showthread.php?t=174501

...and is not this kind of casual acceptance of violence towards dogs in the name of 'testing for courage ' a big reason why such dreadful training methods such a the one shown at the start of this thread are used ?

I'm not sure there is any point in discussing this with you as you clearly have your views that you don't want to change, but i will have one last go.

It is nothing like that video and that's a ridiculous comparison so I won't even go there.

The test of courage is to demonstrate that the dogs has the correct nerves for the breed (and therefore is ok to be bred, hence it is a breed test). People go on about the GSD's health (and rightly so) but more young GSD's are put to sleep for temperament than health.

So many dogs have been bred from poorly nerved parents, resulting in nervous dogs, with some breeds this isn't such an issue because the dogs tend to favour flight over fight. With a breed like GSD's to tend to be more reactive, if you have nervousness you tend to have fear aggression.

It's fine that pet dogs are never tested for nerve strength, they don't need to be, but for breeding dogs then I think it's vital for this breed (among other things). I would never buy a puppy from parents who don't have strong nerves and thats not always clear by just meeting a dog.

Anyway, I think I'll leave the debate now, I'm off to bash my dog with a frying pan for some fun.

Edited to add....Once again, the reason I do Sch is because my DOG LOVES IT.....did you miss that part? If he didn't like it then I wouldn't do it......whether YOU think its a good sport or not...shouldnt it be what the dog thinks that is more important?
