With regards to Hayleys comments about breeding with little regard to health I know of no standard that states that unhealthy dogs should be bred from. Sadly the many pet breeders who have an 'accidental' litter (which seems to be repeated) or breed because they think their bitch should have a litter or all those who let their dogs be used at stud also have very little regard for health.

Ok so you may not have thoughts on whether its right or wrong but to use the arguement that it happens elsewhere as well to justify the killing of these dogs doesnt to me seem right. Of course it happens in other areas of animal keeping but this thread is about dog racing not breeding for show or pet. Same as the amount of labs being bred, 2 wrongs do not make a right IMO.

They are the lucky ones, next time you go hang round after the racing and see the dogs that havent done well disappearing off with the local slaughter man, they travel the tracks doing the deed for those who cant even be bothered with the vets fee to pts.

Alternativey you could visit the local strays kennels and see how many are PTS there every day, the same healthy animals. Yes this is about dog racing but exactly the same applies in day to day life of any dog situation and far more so in so called pet dogs.

Its pointless laying blame, push for legislation instead of slating folk, when for the most part they act responsibly.
Dawn.

Where exactly have I 'justified' the killing of any healthy animals (apart fromt he ones I eat!). I don't agree with it but until legislation is brought in which stops mass production of dogs for whatever market we will have a homeless dog problem which has to be dealt with, no matter how unpleasantly.

Around 10,000 dogs retire every year, do you think they all find homes? No they go to places as reported earlier this year where they are shot if lucky, poisoned, hung, drown or simply left to starve to death, no one quite knows how many because the authority in charge dont care or record what happens to them, so probably around 6,000 simple disappear and these are the ones that have tried to earn the right to live.

Im sure the many greyhound and lurcher rescues will be happy to know that they really are not needed as only a few owners/trainers are throwing away these dogs (cant help but wonder just why so many are in rescue then).

25,000 pups are registered every year, thats registered not just bred, the number is actually a lot higher. The majority of these do not make it into racing, for one thing there is not the demand anymore and so the rest are disposed off, around 10,000 a year.

As to the racing, of course dogs love to run but they love to run to have fun not to be forced to break into a sprint on a frozen track with no warm up and with an injury. Funnily enough of all my dogs my greyhounds run the least.

Yes i have met racing greyhound, retired and working, i also knew the one of the men very well who ran the somerset rescue center for greyhounds and lurcher, i also used to work in his chairty shop to help out for free, so yes bad owners in racing, just like every field of owning dogs, breeders, showing, working, pet etc, please dont think thier isnt good owners because thier are

Before I started this thread, I really had no idea what happens to these greyhounds after racing. I thought they raced until they were 5/6 years old, and then they were either kept by their owners, or they were rehomed via the rescue centres.

I had no idea about the cruel, damn right nasty things that happen to them when they are no longer required, or they do not meet standard.

How wrong can someone be?

Greyhounds in a way are similar to pigs, cows & sheep etc.All are bred for a single purpose-for our benefit which always eventually results in their death.

Do i agree with greyhound racing? Yes.They are doing the job for which they enjoy and are designed for.Its the more seedier side of some involved which i dont like.
