Lure Coursing

Has anyone tried this with a scent hound (specifically a Beagle)?

Our oldest has been racing on the straight over 100 - 170 yards chasing a lure for over a year now. The little one has recently joined her. They love it! But in the park they play chases and 'sprint' for much longer - perhaps even as much as a kilometer - certainly a few hundred yards. They also like to change direction a lot. So I figured lure coursing was the way to go. We've found a place nearby (primarily for deerhound) and are taking them in a couple of weeks.

Anyone with experience of this? Better still, anyone with video of their dogs in action???

It is something I would love to try when Beau is old enough, is the place you have found for all breeds?

Yes - all breeds welcome. The next meeting is on 7th June. It's a monthly event. It's in Fife.

This is the info for last year, but I know somewhere there's info on the same website for this year:

If you aren't too far away it's probably worth taking your little one to watch. They'll learn just from seeing the others race.

Cheers for that, now saved to favourites

Fife is not too far and it would give me an idea if he would chase the lure.

I remember reading that there is a place in Wales that hires out the gear for your own event.

I do it with my Terriers, but dont forget Beagles are scent hounds not sight hounds. The ones I have seen do it at game fairs lose sight of the lure quickly, but if they are used to chasing as in racing they may look rather than sniff!

I have my own electric lure, its great fun!!

They're having a blast !

In the first video - pause it with 8 sends left.

I can almost see those deerhounds watching.

Love the round of applause in the 2nd video.

I see you're a deerhound lover Phil - you might appreciate these piccies taken on the day:

And a video of deerhound racing taken by someone else at the same venue last season:

EDIT: Actually Phil, I've just noticed you're in Perthshire. Are you a regular at these events?
