Don't know what to do for the better anymore

First apologies but this has to be long to explain all. I bought a puppy at 3\12 months knowing it was blind in one eye as it had been hurled out of the kennel by its mum at 24hours old but although he had to fight for his life I was told he was otherwise fine when I bought him. I soon noticed erratic movement in his hind legs.. 4 different vets said HD.. each time I questioned it ..asked it it could be neurological was told no. its HD ..having had Hd in another dog didn't seem like it to me...I got refered to an animal hospital with regard to a tpo operation. After a thorough examination was told thought there was more than hips at fault. More hip xrays and a spinal scan.. was told yes poor hips..spine clear... neorlogical problem probable. Could still have the tpo operation but may not help him.. go home and think about it for 3 weeks. Well. there was no way I was going to put him through that unless I knew it was going to help him so made the decision to try to give him a normal life .. start gentle excercise and hope he learns to cope which my vet agreed with.. I am convinced that he was brain damaged at a day old and keep telling myself he hopefully won't get any worse. We go for a lead walk everyday but he does tire and lays down a couple of times..I worry about him constantly.even dread the day he starts to cock his leg up as I am sure he will fall over. Otherwise he is an intelligent happy little boy. All the vets and the hospital have told me to keep him on daily metacam for his hip pain... I am not happy about this and have to say I am not convinced he needs it..hard to tell as his movement is so bad anyway... he stared passing blood and had sickness last night but is bright in himself today so now wondering if this is the metacam... any opinions on how you would deal with this whole situation will be appreciated.. am I being fair not getting his brain scanned for example? What help would it be to him? I ask myself these questions every day....don't sleep worrying about him.. ..

Do you not trust your vet? Because if you don`t it is easy to change to someone you feel more able to talk to - and tbh these are health problems that need professional advice.
The blindness in one eye isn`t big problem IMO. But joint pain in a young dog does need investigating. It could be serious or it could be something that will improve as the dog matures. Either way, you need a diagnosis you are satisfied with, and options for treatment before you can make informed decisions.
Is your pup insured btw?
Re the metacam - there are alternatives which can be used if the dog reacts badly to Metacam. I would contact the vet and voice your concerns if you feel it doesn`t suit your dog.

The joint pain has been investigated.. he has seen 4 vets and spent a day in the hospital having more exrays and a spinal scan. He is insured thankfully..last scan and exray cost over £1000... everything ruled out except hips not too good and probably neurological problems. His blindness in one eye no bother,, he has never known any different.

Oh gosh. Firstly I wouldnt bother with the brain scan, not at the moment anyway, as I dont know what could be done, and it doesnt sound like it is necessary.

As regards the HD, or hip and joint pain, if you dont think he needs the Metacam, could you leave him off it for a few days to see if you notice any difference. However, I would try out something different to Metacam, especially as he may need to take it long term. I will have a search through my files, as I did have the details of something which has had some excellent results without side effects. Even something like Yumove may help.

No metacam given today... reading the side effects on here and the state he was in last night scared me!..He is bright as a button now playing in the garden with toys so will see how he gets on in the next few days without it but if he is going to need painkillers daily will really appreciate your findings.. many thanks

Metacalm can go for tum/digestion in big way. Make sure you let the vet know it isnt agreeing, they can try something else.

Its marvellous youve taken this pup on. Ive no experience in neurological problems. Could you maybe take a video of him to let folks see?

I am only presuming it may be the metacam... to be fair he could have eaten something nasty in the garden though he has left very few plants in it to destroy!!! Site tells me I cannot download attachments??? Not easy to describe as it is so eractic.... back legs cross over and also splay right out or both close together sideways the list goes on!!! He kicks his left one up and moves around all the time he is eating.. I have had to replace all my wooden floors with fitted carpets to help him cope!!!

Any doubt at all and stop metacam---so you did the right thing.

Second opinions are a good way to go----maybe a specialist if he is insured? If not ask around and see if you have a local vet that might help as well as your own.

Good luck.
