No, it wasn't malicious. Nobody else or any ones dog was involved.
They have had a post mortem already, just waiting results of tests.

How sad and terrible for the owner

Years ago it happened to a young Doberman who had been benched near us, I can't remember which show it was now, we guessed it had an undetected heart problem .
