For your convenience (TZ style)
For your convenience, we are closing the store.
Our local Somerfield (in Kirkwall, 15 miles away) has been bought over by Tesco. So that they can make it look more Tesco-y and less Somerfieldy, they've closed it (for 10 weeks). This leaves, for 20,000 people, one mediocre-sized Co-op, and a Lidl.
Some locals are up in arms about potential closure of local shops as a result of Tesco's arrival. I seem to remember all this being said about the arrival of Safeway, Morrison's and Somerfield (one after the other, same building), but the local shops are all still here. Hopefully, the arrival of Tesco will merely administer a much-needed boot up the jacksie, getting some of the local businesses into the nineteenth century!
The closure does leave us kinda short-supplied, particularly in the dog food sector (remember, the TZBCs will eat only minced beef, no commercial stuff for their sophisticated palates
), and what it does to the residents of the Outer Isles (who can only come perhaps once a month, and making a weekend of it) can only be guessed at.
One can only hope that the Tesco service is sufficiently better to make the "inconvenience" worthwhile!
