Dog-sitters? - Oxford/Abingdon?

We have been lucky that my parents have had our dog if we have been away and couldn't take him with us.
I'm now thinking I ought to find out about dog-sitting in Oxford/Abingdon area in case they ever can't.
Unsure about it - what do you do if you can't take your dog or go on an unsuitable holiday? Does anyone use dog-sitters who live in or take dog in their home?
I think kennels wouldn't be a good idea as he needs lots of exercise.
I live near Abingdon/Oxford so if anyone can recommend any this way that would be useful too.
(I have started a sep thread about holidays with dogs as thats what i'd prefer but there are occassionally events where you can't take your dog.)
