14 yr old dog sudden panting attacks

Hi
This is my first time, so dont really know the format. I have a 14 year old dog, who 75% of the day just acts like you would expect an old dog to. Then suddenly he starts to pant very heavily and pace back and forth, he has been destructive on a couple of ocassions which he has never done before. During the night his sleep pattern is very disturbed (and therefore so is mine). He cries and is very anxious and again pants heavily. The vet has presribed diazapan to give to him at night to basically knock him out and vivitonin twice a day. Anyone have the same problems and any advice?

Hi I would post in the Health section as more people will see it and respond as usually introductions are just for people to say hi and welcome.

It sounds like Canine Cognitive Dysfunction to me, but if you've seen your vet recently I would have thought he would have picked up on it. My parson russell had CCD with very similar symptoms, it came on quite suddenly too, it really reminds you that they are knocking on a bit.

I don`t know if this`ll help, but my 13 y.o. started with bouts of heavy panting and we had all sorts of tests done, then he stopped! I think at this age you get all sorts of `Oh my god, is this the beginning of end` moments, and all you can do is help them be comfortable. I hope your boy feels better soon.

Lots of good advice already. I'd just like to add my old dog has panting sessions when he is stressed & also when he has indigestion. Hope you get him sorted.

Increased panting can also indicate pain which could also explain the crying that you are hearing as well.
