dog books

Are there any dog books that people would recommend to read to develop my knowledge of dogs. In any areas such as behaviour. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I think its great that you want to do this.

I personally love the Ceaser Milan books (just put his name in the search at Amazon.co.uk). He gives good insight into how dogs see things which in turn helps you to understand them better.

Without doubt I would consider the following authors, their writing is superior and exceptionally well researched, I refer to them often:

1. Patricia McConnell, in particular, 'The Other End of the Leash' and For the Love of a Dog'. The books have a bibliographic section for each chapter, for further reading. Very highly thought of author.
2. Turid Rugaas, in particular 'On talking terms with dogs - Calming Signals'. A great way to understand what your dog is telling you.
3. Jean Donaldson, in particular 'The Culture Clash'.
4. Raymond and Lorna Coppinger, 'Dogs: A startling new etc etc'

Just a personal view, but I would stay away from people who are making their millions via TV programmes, and try these first. By all means return to the others afterwards...you will notice the difference

This is onewhere lots of people will give lots of different answers - some of what has been suggested already I would say to steer clear from and others will disagree with my suggestions - we all like different things ....I would suggest anything by

Gwen Bailey

John Fisher

Barbara Sykes

Bruce Fogle

Roger Caras

I would say read everything but keep your own judgment. When researching aggression, I read a huge amount - some of it downright dangerous, most of it a bit irrelevant and a little really helpful. What aspect of doggy stuff are you looking at? Behaviour? Training? Psychology? Specific Problems?
