Difference between Check chain and Choke chain?

Hello, can someone please explain the difference between these two, as far as I can work out choke chains are chains that tighten if a dog pulls on it. And check chains are just yanking the dog around.

None of these i endorse by the way, Just wanted to know the difference.

I think they are both the same thing just another name. You also get half check/choke chains which are better to use.

There is no difference at all. At some point, the name was changed to try to make these torture devices seem less barbaric.
The only good use for one of those vile things is to hang keys from ones belt with. They should be banned from being anywhere near dogs.
At agility, anyone new coming to class with one leaves without it once they have the reality of the internal damage explained to them.

The club trains on the land where I live so its my rule that no-one sets foot on it, for training with me, with a chokered dog and if they do its part of my rule that I will remove the chain and bin it. Only had to do it once so far and yes the owner was happy and very relieved to be educated about it as they were totally unaware of the ramifications to their dog

A half check doesnt close on the dog so they can give the intended sound but without the strangling effect.
My Gremlin wears a half check but only cos she likes to play with her tag and she cant reach it on a normal flat collar.
Her lead is never attached to it though. I only ever walk any dog of mine with them wearing a comfortable trail harness - their collars are for ID tags only

I have used check collars in the past on my Great Dane and on both of my Labs. Used correctly they are a useful tool, and I've never inflicted any injuries on any of my dogs using them. I currently use a half check collar for Len with no bother. Not everyone thinks they are tools of the devil....

Yes, both the same. Half check collars are kinder. Can also be kinder than a normal flat collar if your dog pulls hard. My Staffie had not been trained when I got her in January. Pulled like a train in a flat collar, to the point of choking herself. We did go to training classes and did lots of heelwork. She likes a fine leather half check best and walks to heel very well. I think she likes it as the collar is not heavy, and has some give in it. As I live near a busy main road, she has to go on the lead for part of a walk.

yep...same thing....theyre only cruel if you dont know how to use one properly.....I have a good friend who is a board certified othopedic (vet) specialist and he will tell anyone who asks....he has seen as many injuries with the misuse of flat collars as he has with choke/check chains.

I have been training my own dogs for over 20 years with choke chains.....not one has ever had problems with the trachea, neck or back and most have lived into old age....the dog I have now has major fear issues, I tried a flat, martingale,, harness, halti, gentle leader.....Ive tried clicker, t-touch and food....nothing worked, I put a choke chain on her...she walking to heel, sitting, laying down....with her ears up and her tail wagging, her confidence has soared, I havent had to give any harsh corrections as I use a lot more motivation than I give corrections, shes never yelped, choked, turned blue or backed away in fear of me, the leash or the chain.....like I said and like Vicki said....used correctly theyre better than any other training tool.

I have to agree with vicki on this. I use a choke chain on Tia and it hasnt done her any damage. They are only cruel if they are not used properly

That's just the point, they are freely availabe to any moron (not for a minute suggesting you are one!!!!) to buy and use on their dog. People buy them to stop their dogs pulling and they just choke themselves to death with it instead. They are supposed to be used to correct a dog yet people think they can haul their dogs around on them and that's ok because they are a "choke" chain Their use is open to abuse and like shock collars they should not be available to anybody that can walk in to a shop with the money to buy one. I do not think they are "tools of the devil" (good description!) but neither do I think it is appropriate that they are on sale to the general public. It is unfotunate that so many people are still influenced by the jerk and puke methods of Barbara Woodhouse and feel that this method of training is necessary or acceptable.

It may be that you haven't done Tia any damage, maybe you know how to use one correctly but too many people don't have a clue and that is a recipe for disaster. I totally agree with Patch on this, first time for everything!

hi yes i have too agree with the above both my too are on half chokes,i have seen more dogs beening choked on slip leads than choke chains!!! any collar/lead can do damage if not used properley!!!
