The Boxer who saves lives

An eight-year-old dog is saving the lives of his fellow animals after becoming a blood donor.

Taz, a boxer who lives in Walkden, Greater Manchester, regularly gives blood to save dogs in need - and each unit he donates saves the lives of up to four of the animals.

He has been donating blood for two years and has given enough to save more than 20 canines.
...[snip]...
Taz donates through Pet Blood Bank UK, which is Britain's first charity of its kind, and was established to help save the lives of animals.

The charity collects blood from donors at various locations around the UK and then supplies them to veterinary practices, saving thousands of dog's lives every year.

Well done Taz - well done his owner, and well done all the other dog blood donors and their owners!

Puppy stolen from humane society found thanks to a social website

Marlowe was stolen during regular business hours from the Oregon Humane Society (OHS). The two-year-old puppy had been missing since September the 16th, and thanks to a very detailed tip that was sent via a social website, the dog has been recovered.

The tip was almost complete. The person gave a name, address and phone number of the person that was thought to have Marlowe. Police and OHS employees went to the address described, and brought Marlowe back.

Shortly after being vaccinated at three in the afternoon on the 16th, she disappeared. She had just been put into a padlocked kennel with her litter-mate in a restricted area. Usually, one needs a key card to access the area.

Spokesperson for the OHS, David Lytle said that there is absolutely no connections between the person found to have Marlowe and any staff at the OHS.

“Their hearts were broken when Marlowe was stolen,” said Lytle. “Everyone was very thrilled when they heard she was found.”

Yesterday, Marlowe and foster mom Lisa Achilles were reunited at the OHS. Marlowe seemed very happy to be back in her care.
...[snip]...
The people found with Marlowe claim to have been given the puppy by some young kids at Lincoln Park. The kids told the people that they had found her. At this time, there are no further investigative leads in the case.
Apologies but the link to the full article, photographs and video cannot be posted as it mentions "another site" - sorry so here is a photograph

I do so love a happy ending!

[Not sure whether she was two month's old or two years old though - I think two months and not years as stated.]

Dog who protected Colombian cartel drug traffickers now fights crime with police

A former 'gangster' dog who once protected a Columbian drug lord is being re-trained by police to fight crime.

'Pecas', which means Freckles in English, had previously belonged to Colunbian gang member Cesar Martinez, known as Tierra.

The dog was confiscated by authorities and put into a six-month training programme when his owner was captured by authorities.

Major Milton Leonardo Sandoval, deputy head at the police academy dog training school near Bogata, said: "Pecas is a dog who arrived at the school some ten days ago.

"He was seized during an operation to arrest a drug trafficker. It turns out the dog was protecting him and warning him about activities taking place in his surroundings."
...[snip]...
The mongrel dog, 3, is now being trained together with other police dogs.

"We have introduced Pecas to the other dogs at the police academy in order to allow him to adapt to the other dogs in order to remove any aggression the dog may show towards other animals or people," said Sandoval.

"The head of narcotics told us to train this dog in a speciality and so we are training him for search and rescue missions. He's a dog who meets with the requirements for this.

"Genetically, we can see he has a great sense of smell and we think he can be used for the good of society."

Gracie the Labradoodle Fell 200 Feet Off a Cliff -- And She's Fine!

Oregon's Columbia River Gorge is an area of unparalleled scenic beauty, with waterfalls, dense vegetation, and cliffs. Lots of cliffs. One of those cliffs nearly did in a spirited Labradoodle named Gracie, but this dog knows how to take a tumble.

It happened on Sunday, when Michelle Simmons, her kids, and her dog Gracie were part of a large hiking group, which included another dog, enjoying a trail in the Punchbowl Falls area of the gorge. As dogs will be dogs, they started playing on the trail. Gracie got a little too close to the edge of the cliff. Then Gracie went over the cliff.

The hiking group was frantic, but it could do nothing, according to Fox 12.

"We were all just hysterically crying, we were all just devastated. We thought we had just witnessed the worst thing -- your dog falling down a cliff," Simmons said.

Simmons described the moments after watching Gracie disappear.

"We kept hearing her rolling and rolling and heard her hit on the ground, and she yelped out, and we didn't hear anything after that," she said. "We thought we had lost her."

As the dog was out of sight and silent, everybody assumed the worst; it seemed impossible that Gracie survived. After the family sorted out their feelings and contacted authorities about what had happened, they held an impromptu memorial service right on the trail, remembering their beloved family dog.

It was during that service that a hiker approached. "I saw your dog, I saw your dog!" he said, according to Simmons. "You're dog is alive! I saw it on the ledge."

Gracie had tumbled 200 feet and survived.

The Oregon Humane Society Technical Rescue Team was called in to get the dog, but it took some effort. First the rescuers had to make the one-hour hike up the steep Eagle Creek Trail. Once there, the team lowered a rescuer down the 200-foot cliff in darkness.

He radioed up with good news, and Simmons was stunned at what she heard.
"'She's walking, she's running,' he said, and we heard her barking," Simmons told Fox 12. "I couldn't believe it."

The rescuer fitted Gracie in a harness and hoisted her up, and the dog appeared fine.

"They pulled her up," said Simmons. "I couldn't believe it until I touched her head and I kissed her and said, 'You're alive!'"

Gracie was able to hike out of the gorge on her own, and she was taken to the Oregon Humane Society for treatment and X-rays, which showed no serious injures. She just got a cut on her lip.

"It's a miracle," said Simmons.

Nathalia: Beautiful abused Saluki rescued from Qatar gets help

Saved from a life on the streets of Qatar and brought to the US by ASHA: Alabama Sighthound Adoptions, Nathalia the rescued Saluki has old fractures to her pelvis, left ulna, and right elbow. She is currently undergoing therapy to help strengthen her muscles prior to surgery to repair her right elbow, including water therapy. The other injuries are too old to benefit from surgery now.

ASHA writes: “When ASHA accepted Nathalia, we understood she had prior skeletal trauma. What we did not know was to what extent. Her right hip is shattered and her right front shoulder is broken with a fragment that has embedded into soft tissue. Amputation is not an option as the hip is not stable enough to help her balance. To add insult to injury, her body is riddled with “ballistic” metal objects identified as buckshot. During her spay, buckshot was removed from her womb. Nathalia is the sweetest, most loving dog. She is quick to give you a kiss and a cuddle. ASHA needs to raise 4 K in order to pay for Nathalia’s orthopedic repair.”

Alabama SightHound Adoption is a not-for-profit group specializing in the rescue, rehabilitation, and placement of sighthounds, primarily Salukis and Saluki mixes, that they bring to the U.S. from Qatar. ASHA works with dedicated volunteers throughout the world who help to free the dogs from lives where they are used for hunting and racing, then abandoned and left to die on the streets, or in the deserts, once their owners no longer have need for them.
...[snip]...
“Nathalia is one such dog, [abandoned and left to die]. She was brought to ASHA, knowing she had some orthopedic issues, but the full extent of her injuries was not known until she underwent comprehensive testing here in the U.S. Working together with the staff at the University of Florida’s School of Veterinary Medicine, it was discovered that Nathalia was riddled with buckshot, has a separated left elbow with embedded shrapnel, a crushed pelvis that has healed incorrectly (because she was never given medical care in Qatar while living on the streets), and a severely damaged left hip. Amputation is not an option due to the problems with her front leg.

Last report from our veterinary contact at the school: "The right patella is damaged but not causing any issues. The left hip however is severely damaged. There is deviation of the colon to the right (she’s lucky she maintained function neurologically). There is also “ballistic” material throughout... They would reattach the triceps tendon to the bone, move the bone fragment down to where it’s supposed to be, apply a tension band to keep it in to place as well as some suture, then place an external fixator to keep the piece in place but also maintain range of motion. They would also clean out any soft tissue that is restricting the joint, such as fibrous scar tissue. She would be in the fixator for 5-8 weeks then it would be removed. There would be additional rads to make sure everything is healed well as well as physical therapy throughout and after.”

“Nathalia is relatively young, and though she experiences chronic pain, she has remained happy and loving, even after suffering this horrible abuse. We are dedicated to relieving her suffering and giving her true quality of life.
She is currently receiving water therapy in order to build her body back up in preparation for her surgeries.”

Nathalia is in foster care with intent to adopt.

And this is her first time in the therapy pool for her water therapy sessions.

I hope that the surgeries are successful and that Nathalia finds her forever home.

Twenty puppies rescued from a field in Saskatchewan

A total of twenty puppies were found abandoned in an open field near Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada by Greg Zubiak. Zubiak was out hunting at the time, and saw the pups ranging from three to six weeks old huddled together on a towel.

“As I walked around the truck I could see two little eyes looking at me and I could see it was puppies. So then all of them looked at me and I was shocked,” explained Zubiak. “All I said was, ‘OK, come on,’ and as I said that, they all got up and made their way towards me howling and barking.”

Zubiak wrapped the pups up in his jacket to keep them warm, and brought them straight away to the local humane society in Battleford (BHS).

Michelle Spark, the BHS shelter coordinator couldn’t imagine why someone would abandon the pups, but suspect that they may have been meant to be coyote bait.

The pups were in poor shape when brought in. Each one of them showed signs of dehydration and malnutrition. After a full medical workup, the pups are expected to make a full recovery.

Now the task of making sure there is space for each of the puppies and enough supplies to get them into adoptable shape. The shelter is seeing quite a bit of help for people throughout the surrounding areas. So far, there has been inquiries and responses from over 300 people and organizations poised to assist with just about anything.

BHS has had over 70,000 views, and offers as far away as Mexico have come in for anything these precious little guys need.

How diabolical of the evil person who dumped them - I do hope they find forever homes soon.

Dog wins award after surviving a tangle with a tractor

Usually when a dog and a tractor tangle, the dog doesn't come out a winner, but a Labrador retriever named Charlie from Indianapolis has defied that logic.

Charlie has been named the winner of the annual VPI Hambone Award handed out by Veterinary Pet Insurance for the most unusual insurance claim of the year after surviving a fractured spine and a lacerated kidney after a run-in with a tractor. Charlie loves riding with owner Jessica Parson on her family's farm, but the dog nearly died when she slipped off and was crushed by a large piece of farming equipment being towed by the tractor.

A veterinary team at Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital performed two surgeries to save the Labrador's life, including a surgery to remove a failing kidney. As part of the award, the hospital will receive $10,000 from VPI through the Veterinary Care Foundation to help pet owners who cannot afford treatment.
Charlie and her owner Jessica Parsons with the veterinary medical team that treated Charlie at Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Charlie was the winner of the online voting between 12 nominees selected from 1.1 million insurance claims in the sixth year of the contest. She was awarded with her own swag bag of doggy treats, toys and an emergency pet kit.

Charlie beat out runner-up Louie, a large mixed breed dog from Louisville that ate a diaper, a tube of diaper rash cream, an entire bottle of baby lotion and a children's book from a toddler's room. Finishing in third was Jack, a Jack Russell terrier from Virginia who was snatched up and carried away by a large snowy owl, suffering severe internal and external injuries. Previous winners have included Winnie, a mixed breed dog from Massachusetts that ate two pounds of frozen onion rings, and Peanut, a dachshund buried alive by a skunk.

How nice that the hospital will receive $10,000 from VPI through the Veterinary Care Foundation to help pet owners who cannot afford treatment.

Amazing what the second and third dogs went through, also the previous winners.

Teenager risks life to save his dog

Last month, many neighborhoods in Nogales, Ariz., flooded and the rising waters forced area residents to evacuate leaving everything behind. Thirteen-year-old Manuel Andres Sierra couldn’t leave without rescuing Bones, a six-year-old Pit Bull.

Some might say that Bones is not the most friendly dog, but to Sierra, the pet is his companion, friend and protector.

“He takes care of us, he plays with me,” Sierra told Nogales International. “He protects us.”

On Sept. 17, 2014, Sierra and his family had to leave their home late at night, but the teenager refused to leave the family’s three pets behind. Two of the dogs were smaller and safe with family members, but Bones was locked in the backyard behind a 6-foot fence.

The family tried looking for the key to unlock the fence but they couldn’t find it and that was when Sierra decided to jump the fence, land in ankle-deep-and-rising water and carry Bones over the fence.

“(It’s) something I wouldn’t have been able to do,” Sierra’s aunt, Alda Molina said. “Maybe I would have, if (Andres) wouldn’t have been here. But yeah, he took it up himself. He jumped the fence and everything.”

The three pets were transported to a family member’s home outside the flooded area. The rest of the family spent a few nights at a hotel. Once the waters receded, Sierra the three dogs and other family members returned home.

Thanks to the teenager, Bones is alive today.

The Story Of Eve And Dillon, Two Disabled Dogs Who Found A Home In Each Other

Eve is an 11-month-old Catahoula mix.

She was found freezing in a Bear Valley snow drift at just 9 weeks old. She is both completely deaf and missing an eye, and was rescued last Christmas by Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue, a nonprofit that is dedicated to rescuing canines from the high-volume kill shelters of Kern County, Calif.

"It was amazing that she hadn't frozen to death or been eaten by wildlife because we live in the middle of the mountains," Zach Skow, Marley's Mutts' executive director, told HuffPost.

But Eve's journey to happiness was far from over.

Her disabilities made it difficult for her to interact with other dogs, and she was constantly chasing shadows due to her inhibited senses. This led to a failed adoption shortly after her rescue.

But that was before she met Dillon.

This handsome mutt has a heartbreaking story of his own. The 2-year-old Border Collie mix is completely blind and was found abandoned at a boarding facility after his family never returned to pick him up.

He found a new family in Eve.

As soon as Dillon ran into her--that's literally what happened-- they became best friends," Skow wrote. Though their rescuers expected their disabilities to drive them apart, Eve and Dillon formed a special bond in which each made up for what the other lacked.

The team wrote on a social networking site:
Dillon and Eve are the perfect compliment for one another, and essentially watch/lookout for each other.. Each has never been more at ease than when they are together. We walk off leash and she leads him. His acute hearing helps her feel more comfortable about her inability to hear. Yin and Yang they are!
According to ABC, the rescue's posts caught the attention of local resident Shelley Scudder. Despite already having two dogs at home, she decided to make room in her life for both of the disabled pooches. They were adopted together on July 17.

"The home they are in is quite honestly perfect, and the two even have an 11-year-old human that they have added to their gang!" Skow told HuffPost.

How's that for a happily ever after?

Lost dog hitches ride in police car to find her owners!

On September 29, 2014, a small black-and-white terrier dog was found roaming the parking lot of a police station in Brighton, Mich. After the pet hitchhiked a ride in a police car, the lucky pooch found its way home.

The small, female dog was found wearing a collar but no ID tags. The puppy used her cute puppy eyes to wiggle herself into the hearts of many of the officers present at the station. Officers played with the dog and nicknamed her “Thor” while they looked for her owners.

Rhonda Cole, the station’s secretary, and an officer jumped on a squad car with the dog and drove around nearby homes asking residents if the found puppy belong to any of them, but unfortunately no one knew “Thor” or who she belonged to.

Cole then decided to call area animal hospitals to see if anyone had called looking for a lost dog. When the secretary reached the Town and Country Animal Hospital in Brighton Township, she learned someone was looking for a dog matching Thor’s description.

Thor’s real name was Kia and soon after the call to the pet clinic, the little lady was escorted back to her home.
