Bailey success at last!
This is a little delayed but I just wanted to share how proud I am of my big boy!
I got Bailey at 6 months old (Rotti x GSD) he was being given up because he chased the pet rabbit around the garden and it died of a heart attack. When I went to collect him it was clear he hadn't been taught any boundaries and they had small children in the house that he was completely in love with but also bullying and they were clearly not happy in his presence. I could tell there was more to this than chasing a rabbit but I was prepared for a challenge.
When I got him home I took him straight for a walk with my mothers dog and he was fine although he had clearly not been used to a lead - another warning sign but achievable!
It soon became clear just how little this dog had experienced as he was terrified of many everyday sights.
It is probably not necessary to say that this fear, as he matured, turned to aggression. Even though I immediately started socialising and training him.
I took him to see a great trainer in Worcester who does aggression rehabilition where dogs could all walk together and learn that there was nothing to be scared off and that it can be positive. Eventually the muzzle came off and he didn't think the world was against him.
I eventually became confident enough to try him at an agility competition, there was a beginners class right at the end of the day and my friends convinced me to give him a go. He went clear! He didn't care that other dogs were stood around or even barking!
I now run him at steeplechase at all UKA competitions but he would get frustrated with me not keeping up with him and come back and mouth me to try to move me faster (clearly didnt work!). So since August last year we only achieved 2 clear rounds, including that initial one.
But during half term I attended a week long show and Bailey got 4 consecutive clear rounds! He now works ahead listening to my commands and thoroughly enjoying himself!
I am so proud that he has got to this point there was a time that I had given up on it ever happening!
