Rear Dew Claws

This has been triggered from another thread.

Which breeds have rear dew claws? And is it part of the breed standard? Would you have them removed?

Eg
I have read that Pyrenean Mountain Dogs have double rear dew claws and it is part of their BS.

My chocolate long coat Chihuahua has rear dew claws and no I wouldn't have them removed unless they were causing a problem. She is eighteen months and they have not bothered her at all. I've spoken to the Vet about them and he says to leave well alone. Only to address it if it becomes a problem.

Hello WW....me again

Isaac had his rear dew claws removed as we were not prepared to take the risk of him ripping them off when he was blazing the trails. Isaac's a worker

Welfare boy, adopted through SSHC, originally from a BYB. He has a tiny liver and has epilepsy. If it's gonna happen.....it's gonna happen to Isaac .....so one less thing for mummy to stay awake worrying about!

None of our other sibes have had rear dew claws.

Hug your lot again from me.......

Take care WW.

Some welsh are born with them some not, its customary to have them removed as they catch on the feathers and snag on bracken
In my last litter of 7, 3 had rear as well as front alll were removed by my vet at 36 hours old.

The Briard is one of the breeds that has double dew claws on it's hind legs, which should never be removed unless damaged and advised by the vet, they are connected to the leg by bone and the removal is a very painfully procedure what ever the age of the puppy/dog.
