It costs me £100 in petrol to get to most HTM shows----it is a hobby and as such I pay for it.

Loads of people have hobbies which are not self supporting and cost them money.

But how is charging £150 per pup going to protect them from bad breeders.

Some one has a littler of 5 puppies, doesnt do things right so spends out puppies..Do the math..A profit will still be made, so how is it going to stop bad breeders cashing in from their dogs - also add to it that they have 3 bitches bred once a year each...

I too have hobbies mine tend to save me money or I make money from them. I don't see why breeders should lose money each time.

Yep----we'd havre to stop dogs being looked at as a commodity.

Why?

A dog IS a commodity, just as a chicken, fish, cow, or any other living thing that you PAY for!

I OWN my dogs, I bought and paid for them, just like I did for my house, car and fridge. That was KC registration certificates are all about, to prove ownership etc.

What I meant was - only people who are licensed by the government to breed dogs can breed them. Then anyone otuside that system, is fair game to have any puppies bred seized and sold to benefit canine charities.

As the existing system seems to have done nothing to address the problem of puppy farms and backstreet breeders and idiots who think their dog is 'nice' so want to breed 'just one litter' from it, etc etc.

It depends on how much breeders want to breed ~ if they strongly feel they want to breed, then they should also be prepared to meet the costs.

I don't see why breeders that do it for a hobby should make a profit! If it's primarily a hobby then profit shouldn't be a factor.

If your hobbies started to cost you money or didn't save you money, would you still do them?

Thats what I mean----we'd have to stop the dog being a commodity---it ISN'T the same as a house etc and IMO should be more on par with a child.

You don't 'own' your child as such----I am not sure what you would call it?

KC registration is only a part of 'proving' ownership.

I think we should not be owners but maybe akin to 'carers'

Do you know how much a dog licence costs?

£150 ish I think at the last look.

Hobby breeders (ie those who have fewer than 5 litters a year) do not usually need a licence (there are exceptions).

Who is going to police this? (we cannot police dog licences, driving licences etc)

Who is going to pay for this?

There are big breeders who carry out health tests and breed from appropriate stock. The same is true for hobby breeders.

the reverse is true for both.

I am at a loss to understand what you are trying to achieve and how you think your idea will achieve it?

What about those people whose dogs get pregnant by accident?

You need to think this through.

the best way to control poor breeding is for the CUSTOMER to be more selective!

On another but related point, I just wondered, out of curiosity, whether there are any breeders here who do actually make a profit? I have no gripes if you do, nor would that make me think that profit is your prime motive for breeding ~ I just wondered if profits can be made by reputable & responsible breeders, or is it always a case that a litter of pups costs more than the income from selling them?

(Puppy farms, BYBs & iresponsible breeders not included!).
