Basset Hound Advice

Hi, my name is Sarah and I have two Basset Hounds aged 7 years old and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy at 8 months old.
Just hoping for some advice on my female hound.
She has got hip dysplasia, knee luxation and a cherry eye that has already been operated on three times but the eye keeps becoming a problem.
I was just wondering whether the surgery would be worth it?
At the age she is. She'd need four operations with over a years recovery time.
Just seeking for advice on this matter.
Thankyou X

Hello Sarah welcome.

I understand cherry eye is a condition which can deteriorate. What does your vet suggest, he is really the only person who knows what state the eye is at the moment .
Is your dog in pain.

Sorry I can't be of more help...

Thank you.
The cheery eye can deteriorate? How do you mean?
The vet is in two minds about it as well.

Hi Sarah if left untreated I understand the condition can develop into a more serious eye problem with the eye becoming inflamed and infected . Is it one eye or both.

I don't know what your vet has done already or what he might be intending to do. I think the usual treatment is drops and if that fails forming a pocket to hold the gland and stitching it in place.

You mention a number of other conditions, if they are to be treated surgically maybe the eye could be operated on at the same time.

So what would I do...
... read up any information on all forms of treatment,
take into account what has been done already and what the vet is considering doing and if the dog is in pain.
Only by knowing as much as possible can an informed decision be made

If your vet is unsure what to do something to consider is asking for a referral to a RVC hospital there is one not far from you in Liverpool

Whatever you decide to do I hope it all goes well.

at the extreme end of the spectrum my friends dog had an eye removed due to a tumour (which later turned out to be benign) and hes happy as larry. Perhaps one op would be better than 4 and a year being at the least uncomfortable?

Id go to an eye specialist first and see what they say (no offence to your current vet of course!)

I would ask to be referred to a specialist too if my vet was not sure what to do next. Poor girl, I hope she feels better soon.

Thankyou for all your advice. The vet is in two minds as well considering she is also suffering from Entropion of the eyelids.
He doesn't want to disturb the other while operating on one problem. She is at the minute on drops to reduce the inflammation. I just hope we can gather a concrete answer soon. X
