Walking my dog in a hurricane.

Hello to all, especially those in the northeast awaiting hurricane sandy. I'm a new member.

Please help. I need to find a way to walk my dog when this storm comes. He's a large mixed breed and usually doesn't mind going out in the rain, but once last year in a terrible storm, we only got 1 block and he stopped and hugged a neighbors fence and was thrilled when I turned around and led him back home. What can I do when It's his usual time to go take care of business? I do have a backyard.

Thanks, Spencer's dad http://www.dogsey.com/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

Hello Moptops, I think most of our members are in the UK and we are hoping that we remain unaffected by Sandy.

I hope you are able to give your dog some exercise in safety.
Please take care and come back and let us know how you have got on.

Has there been any info given on how long the hurricane is likely to last for? If not and it's going to be more than a few days, I would suggest you go away with your dog to visit family, friends, or just find someone dog friendly that you can stop at until it passes.

If the hurricane will have passed within a few days (sorry, here in the UK we don't have them so I know nothing about them) then I'd make use of your back yard for him to go to the toilet. You can always do extra training and have extra play sessions to make up for the lack of walks for that time.

As this is a UK site most of our members are from the UK. There are members from the US and other countries where Hurricanes etc do happen so hopefully someone with more helpful advice will come along soon.

BTW - welcome to Dogsey!

Hi.

I would stick to the back yard until the storm has passed.

Sounds like your dog knows what`s best. I wouldn`t risk my dogs in a hurricane.

TBH I wouldn't risk it, make do with your back yard until it passes for yours and your dogs safety.

Welcome to Dogsey.

Just been reading about the hurricane. Are you in an area and will need to evacuate ? Or are you a bit further away but will catch the nasty tail end of the storm ?

Either way sounds like you need to trust your dogs instinct and take care out there. Maybe stick to the yard for now.
