Please help - Activated charcoal on carpet

Due to my own stupidity my daft dog required some activated charcoal yesterday (eating chocolate).
Long story short, early this morning he was vomiting the charcoal back up on to the carpet. Now we rent part of the house and desperately need to clean the carpet.
So far I have used flash disinfectant (what I always used after he has been sick or messed) and two types of carpet cleaner, that you spay on to wet or dry stains and vac off. I don't want to bleach the carpet or anything but I have a massive greyish/blackish mark on the carpet, which is now dry.

Any ideas on what might work??? Please help, I'm desperate to get it cleaned up.

Thank you Lynn, you are brilliant. I did a google but didn't find anything useful. I will start at the top of the list and work down. Thank you again!

I always found a good biological washing powder would do the trick on my cream carpet for accidents, and then I'd use the steam cleaner on it, always got the stains out if you're quick enough. Good luck.

Whatever method you use I would say sponge the carpet gently, don't scrub like my mum did on our shag pile carpet when the dog wee'd on it, and we ended up with a bald patch
