I'm gonna have to ask some of the guys on here which insurers they're with for big dogs - I currently pay £19.60-ish a month with Pet Plan for my rottweiler.

D'you know if your rottie's parents were hip scored? If they had low scores, it doesn't mean yours definitely won't get hip or elbow dysplasia, but it lessens the chance.

Hi Sambo,

We just recently went through the Insurance minefield. We settled on More Than (thanks Dani ) The main downside with them is the £70 or 15%, whichever is greater, excess. We are £10 a month and got 2 months free. The only other thing was the £6000 per condition is non-renewable each year. However, it is per condition (not all of them are).

M&S looked promising but their excess was something like £70 + 15%. Pet Plan looked comprehensive but was quite expensive for equal cover. Their excess policy was better though. Sainsburys again looked promising but we heard that they are now taking ages to settle claims. Tesco was OK but the cover seemed pretty low. Equine and Livestock based Insurance companies apparently take a while to process claims.

Interestingly, Vets are not allowed to give recommendations now

Anyway, I hope this gives you a start

We have one staffy insured with Argos gold ( they have three levels of cover) at £9 as month with £50 excess- have paid approx £900 out so far with no quibbles and one insured with M&S (not claimed yet- fingers crossed we dont) also at £9 a month with £70 excess but they cover for life whereas I think Argos only cover til age 8 or 9

We use petplan - Our last dog, a cavalier, was always sick, he had a heart murmur so was constantlyat the vets. Petplan never had any problem with paying up, so we've insured Archie with them too

I have Teagan (Bullmastiff) with Sainsbury's. It costs £9.98 per month. Only thing is, there is a £50 excess.

A lot of people I know are with M&S, and have no excess. I was going to change to them for that reason!

EDIT: Just checked M&S website, and it says
Up to £7,000 veterinary fees each year (An excess of £40 to £80 and 15% of claim may apply depending on pet and location.)

AND

Pay a small additional premium to remove your policy excess for pets aged 8 and under

Deffinately get lots of quotes though!

Hevvur,

It's really odd, I could have sworn 2 weeks ago it was £70 + 15% but when I checked it says what you've just said.

Apologies if I misled anyone
