I know someone that works at the Police dog training unit at Keston. She told me that they are training more Malinios for work in the force. Reason being, the GSD is losing it's 'edge'.

I think anything which helps the stigma attached to rotties dissapear is a great thing. The police using them is brilliant!

There are more and more rotties where I stay and they are all good dogs. The breed in the hotspot again is the Stafford

Being the owner of a GSD and a Rottie I'm glad to see that Rotts are being used by the police force (as long as they use the dogs intelligence as well as its muscle) but am sad at the same time the GSD is being replaced as they are such an intelligent and loyal dog, many of them go to work in the police force and do that job by day and then go home in the evening and are part of a family unit, its fantastic how they can go from one to the other, that takes a very special dog in my eyes !!

Its a topic causing some controversy in the working dog world but the GSD is here to stay as a working dog - it will just no longer be in a huge majority. Rottweilers from good working lines are not common in the UK so they are unlikely to ever make up a large percentage of Police Dogs, its the Malinois which is fast replacing the GSD in the USA and even in Germany (both in the Police and the military) - Malinois are good dogs but they are becoming fashionable which is the ruin of many a breed - I would guess that they will be neck-and-neck with GSDs as the Police/Working Dog of choice in years to come.

Here in switzerland the majority of police dogs are GSDs and Giant Schnauzers, both of which make very good working dogs. But we also have a fair deal of Malinois. It would probably be about 35% Schnauzers, 10% Malinois, 50% GSD, and 10% other breeds.

As everyone else has said, the police are finding it hard to get the right type of GSD. As in teh UK I don't think that they breed for working purposes as much as they do here. In Germany most dogs (GSD and Rottie) used for breeding have at least a SchH1 or IPO1 title.
