Blackie and buster collar (how to prevent nibbling at wound site when collar is off?)

went to vets today for check up on his cut leg. vet was pleased with the amount that it had healed and said we could take the buster collar off if we were there to supervise him.

tried taking it off when we got home but he immediately went for his leg so we put the collar back on. any suggestions to enable us to take the collar off and stop him chewing his wound.

thanks

Poor Blackie distraction is good to take his attention off the leg, so maybe try a kong or something to chew

The problem is any wound smells, and it is natural for a dog to want to lick it better. As Griff says masking the scent helps,a tiny drop of Teetree oil not on the wound but on the bandage or surrounding area can help with this.

If you are at home with him you could try putting a loose badage or a sock on one of his feet. Trying to get it off will sometimes distract the dog from nibbling at the wound. This should be done only when you are there, eg in the evening when you are all settled down and he starts fussing with the wound. But - he would probably much prefer a stuffed kong as distraction
