Outdated Training Methods / Equipment

Thought it might be helpful to newbies having a discussion on what you believe are outdated training methods

I'll start with one of my pet-hates... electric shock collars!!

I think they are complete unnecessary for 99.9% of dog owners. The only time I think there may be a case to use them is if the dog's life is endangered - eg to train them not to go anywhere near snakes in the hotter climates etc

For almost all other times, I think their use is barbaric, and cruel There are plenty of more positive training methods that can be used for almost all situations

Any device to punish a dog
The prong and choke collar are feve hates of mine, no animal should work for you for fear of its air being taken away from it. Even used correctly a choke collar is cruel and a prong even worse
It makes me so sad that a human being took the time to invent a training collar with spikes going round the inside, it does not mimic a mother dog in any way shape or form

Also all these devices are made worse by the fact that apes when angry or frustraited flail their arms about, not good if those arms are holding something attached to the neck of another animal

Any training method that relys on punishing an animal because the human is to ignorant or too lazy to actualy train the behaiour they want in the first place.

Any form of training that the human believes they are acting like a wolf, we dont know why wolves do what they do, we dont have the same skills as a wolf and our dogs aint wolves anyway

I could go on all day - but I will leave some for others

Smacking a dog.
And the rolled up newspaper tap on the nose

A sure way to break any loyal, trusting bond you had with your dog in seconds.

All the above and...
any pushing/pulling/poking /prodding/grabbing paws /'elevation'/rolling/forcing into submission/ manhandling the dog in any way rather than teaching and allowing it to think and act fo itself .
The use of aversive including water sprays and mouse traps ,
Anything to do with 'showing a dog who is the boss' I don't want dogs to be reluctant slaves I prefer willing companions.

Hitting the dog downwards when it jumps up to greet you.

All of the above, plus anything that requires me to have to go through doors first, eat before my dog, and generally ignore her until she gets so depressed she gives up.
Although not physically punishing, I hate these methods as much.

Outdated and barbaric methods of gundog training, including the ear pinch.

we have to use similar method with our female Akita everyday to remind her of her manners else she would just barge, knock, jump and generally bolsh around the place! She's far from depressed! a very happy, well-rounded dog I think, willing and very happy go lucky care free!

I won't shout, hit or shove her, she would only respond negatively to these.

Still, it's probably down to her young age (2) and the breed, renowned for dominance/confidence?

On the other hand, our male, Mr Zeke has perfect manners.
