Sigh

Stupid mutt has chewed the pad on his heel. Have snipped off the flappy bit with a pair of sharp nail scissors, given it a clean, and told him to leave it alone.

Hopefully 2 out of three of these will sort it.

He was remarkably stoical of my ministrations. Probably because I am the "Great fixer of 'broken' paws"

The number of times he's hopped over to me with a twig/ a leaf/ a screwzled up nettle, a bit of holly , an excess of mud ?! is approaching pathetic.

It's his stop pad. Think he's got to that annoying Hang-nail stage of "I've started so I'll finish".

Cain has done this three times! I don't know what's best, but this worked for us

1. Soak in salt water to clean
2. Nelson's Hypercal cream. Miracle stuff. Antiseptic and healing. I slap it on everything, I know some people are anti creams but wounds definitely appears to heal quicker and do not get infected when I use this (and Cain has had a lot of wounds!!!)
3. Cover for the first day or two until wound is dry if weepy.
4. I cover with a boot on walks for a few days. Tend to leave uncovered around the house to let it air, I found too much covering kept the pad wet.

Hope it heals soon

ETA: if it's his stop pad, you should be fine as long as he doesn't chew it. Cain chews off his entire main paw pad

Thought I might be up for a vet trip this morning. Not a happy dog last night but apart from making him squeal with cold detox prior to warm salt water this morning he seems back to himself today. Will keep an eye.

Now there are two dogs with damaged pads leaping around the office in an unsuitable manner. The retriever is in.

Will detour for some Nelson's though. Got to come in handy.

The magic formula - salt water & Leave the dog at home. He's obviously passed the time while I was at work repairing himself. Looks much better.
