For those who believe that early spaying prevents mammary cancer in bitches

Have a read of this article, which supports what my older vets have told me over the years !!

I did not have first Little One and then Pereg spayed to prevent possible future mammary cancer, nor was it to prevent possibly future pyometra. They were spayed to make sure they would not add to the countless unwanted litters [both of them being the result of such unwanted litters] and because of all the entire dogs roaming loose around the Moshav.

Whether them being spayed helped avoid mammary cancer I do not know. Little One never suffered from it and who knows what will happen with Pereg in the future?

At least I know that Pereg cannot develop pyometra now.

Interesting. I think the avoidance of pyo and pregnancy have always been more of a reason for me. Partly because I`ve had a spayed bitch develop mammary cancer so I`m not under the illusion that spaying definitely prevents it.
It`s a shame these ideas grow into `truths` really - spaying prevents cancer, boosters stop your dog getting sick, neutering calms a dog down....
there is usually a bit of truth there, but no-one ever follows it up with the full story- the provisos and qualifications - and we start to disbelieve the professionals.

Of course we are implicitly asked to assume there was no bias, deliberate or otherwise, on the part of those choosing which papers to include or exclude on the perceived bias of the papers' reviewed....

Having read various things---lots posted by Smokeybear, I didn't think anyone did think that any more?

For me it is the pyo risk and when we had a thread about it I was amazed at how many people had experienced it with unspayed bitches.
