We're new to all this! (advice about getting a dog)

Hi there

My husband and I have been thinking about getting a dog for a long time, we are finally about to take the plunge - we have been to see a 4 year old lurcher (we think) terrier cross, who is adorable but being first timers we're not sure that she'll be too much for us. This is the first dog we've looked at. She is very strong on the lead, which I'm sure training/discipline etc will correct and she is a bit bigger than what we were orginally looking for (she's about the size of a lab). We live in a flat, it has a smallish garden but we have a couple of parks close by, Southsea common and my hubbie is a fitness fanatic so hopefully she will have lots of exercise . We want to make the right decision, whichever dog we get we want it to be forever, no changing our minds. Do we just take the plunge or keep on looking? Any advice/opinions would be gratefully received.

Could you walk away from her? If not, go for it. It won`t be plain sailing, but nothing good ever is. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Where are you getting her from? Some organizations such as the Dog Trust match you to a dog and provide support if you need it.

You can always get help here, although you may have to sort out conflicting advice.

Welcome, neighbour I'm in Milton!

If you are a lurcher fan, may I recommend the LurcherLink website. They do great work specialising in lurchers and rescuing and always have many dogs in need. So if this little doglet doesn't work out, do check them out. Oh, and check them out anyway, they are very supportive and friendly - even if you don't have a lurcher

Edited to add : We are all very nice here too... so when you do get your little one, we will all want to know about it Please do keep in touch.

hi,
you wont know each other untill you have lived together, and only you know if should leave her there or take her home.no dog or puppy is plain sailing all the time.what i will say is i lived with a lurcher for 17years he was my best friend, gentle intelligent(too much )crazy and testing at times, but i would do it all again!also imho a good choice for a fitness fanatic as they are a very naturel type so any amount of exercise goes and boy do they know how to relax after!
good luck in your decision
