How far apart should I keep my hamsters?

I have two male hamsters now, with their own cages. Will they be ok living in the same room? Or will they smell each other ? I don't want them to get upset because they know another hamster is nearby!
They are syrian hamsters, one is about 12 weeks old the other about 6 weeks old

erm, at college we have always kept them side by side.

As long as the cages are not close enough for them to nip each other threwthe bars they will be fine.

Yes they will be fine Brandie - as long as they have their own territory and cages they won't worry about other hamsters in the vicinity.

They are on opposite sides of the room, so no nipping through bars

yep - they will be fine together as long as one or other of them doesn't escape - and they can't reach each other through the bars
