Nail Biting

A friends Springer/Collie bites his nails to the point where they bleed.
The vet said give him chews instead but all he does is bury them and Lianne is spending a fortune just for her dog to bury it
Any help or suggestions?

Never heard that before with a dog. Wonder if something like bitter apple or vicks would stop it you would have to make sure the dog didn't lick it off though.

TW Pepsi goes through stages of biting her nails but not to such an extreme. I hear her crunching them

Hi Nippy I am guessing if the vet has been consulted there is no sign of a bacterial infection of the nail bed which can be one cause of nibbling.

Nail biting can be due to a food allergy so I would look at what the dog is being fed on and I would suggest trying one of the fish based diets if it eats a compete food.
Advise her to Google Dog food/fish .
Arden Grange Sensitive Ocean White Fish & Potato or Wafcol are a couple of reasonable foods .

If it is somthing which has begun fairly recently it could be a reaction to some form of pollen so rinsing the paws with clean water after a walk can help.

Once the nibbling has begun it can quickly become a habit so best to distract the dog when it is nibbling.

I think the idea of chews was to distract him but it didn't work haha.

Geez,you'd imagine if he's biting them to that extreme,surely there must be something going on Ouch...that must hurt
